I think they are wanting us to move away from the traditionaly definition of an OS. For most of the mainstream user, and OS is just a series of applications. These mainstream users are the lifeblood of Microsoft.

If a desktop PC can be dumbed down to simply a terminal that allows you to launch applications that run as web pages, the regular user will not know the difference.

This makes the Desktop PC OS a commodity that a simple less intensive OS such as a scaled down implementation of Linux would handle just fine. That means to the average Joe that they no longer have to worry about personal PC security and their investment in to a PC would last longer.

Businesses are already moving some of their application usage to online programs such as Salesforce.com. Many people use gmail, yahoo mail or hotmail for their email programs. The trend is shifting to moving applications and personal storage of data to a server reducing total cost of ownership

Yes, because an OS is nothing more than a collection of applications and features. (rolleyes)

I'm a Google leghumper as much as the next guy, but come on. Bit of a stretch.

A totally different perspective published back in April '04, suggesting the Google OS is already here, and that you use it every day...

None of those features listed are anything without Disk IO, Threading etc... core operating system features. Suggesting that Sidebar and Google Talk are the beginnings of a Google OS seem a little naieve. They're a collection of productivity apps and utilities, not operating system features.
