Ever since the first generation iPod, I have heard complaints about various things with the iPod. Battery life, recharging the batter, hard drive problems, etc…
Well it looks like there is a book dedicated to the iPod, and understanding it better. The book is called Secrets of the iPod, and on Peach Pit’s website (the publisher), there is a sample chapter which gives some great information on troubleshooting your Apple iPod.
This content is from Secrets of the iPod by Christopher Breen (Peachpit Press 2002)
Failure to boot
There are a few possible reasons why an iPod might not boot beyond the Apple logosome benign and others not so.
The Hold switch is on. Go ahead and smack yourself in the head (and then breathe a sigh of relief) if your iPod won’t start up because the Hold switch is engaged.
Drained battery. Among the most benign problems is an iPod battery that’s drained. Plug your iPod into the power adapter or your computer, and let it charge. If everything’s hunky-dory after that, pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
In some rare cases, the battery may not be drained enough for the iPod to be reset. If you’ve tried other solutions and failed, unplug the iPod from a power supply for 24 hours; then plug it into a power source and attempt to reset it by holding down the Play and Menu buttons for 10 seconds.
Confused iPod. If the iPod still refuses to boot, attempt to reset it by pressing and holding the Play and Menu buttons for 10 seconds.
Incorrect formatting. At some point, you might have thought it would be a nifty idea to reformat your iPod’s hard drivepartitioned it to install Mac OS 9 on one partition and Mac OS X on the other, for example. Bad idea. If you’ve formatted the drive in any format other than Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus), the iPod won’t play music files. To put things right, you must restore your iPod .
There are more tips on the site, and reading all the problems that you can have in that list, I don’t know if I would want an iPod, despite it being one of the best selling Mp3 players, and having a nice look and interface.

6Hi,
My ipod will not play purchased music. It skips right through those songs and lands on songs that I have downloaded from CD’s. Has anyone experienced this and why?
Thanks

44Are there any know Hard Drive issues with the 5th generation 30G video Ipod’s? Mine failed after about 7 weeks (xmas) and the LCD discolored in the first month. Apple is going to replace the unit but I’m concerned if this is a common problem. At first they wanted to charge (overcharge) me $32 for S/H until I threw a fit and now it’s free. Pretty poor tech support and customer service especially considering what you pay for this unit. You only get one free tech support call/question.

45I’m having the same problem as many seemed to be hvaing. I’d use ivero to convert my files to an mvp format, and then it would easily go on my playlist. I’m goin on vacation soon, and i want viedos on my ipod. Can anyone help?

However, when the iPod is disconnected from the computer and I select a song, it just sits on zero seconds and the song does not play. I’ve even used the iPod utility to reset it and try again… same problem. What am I doing wrong?

Then the very next day I went to do the same exact thing. This time my computer thought it was my own ipod and it delted all her songs replacing them with all of mine. this wouldn’t be a real problem except whne i tried to listen to the songs, the ipod just skips over them all.

70I see lots of questions here but where are the answers? My iPod is stuck with a white screen..won’t turn off no matter what.. won’t show menu or anything.. nada…
I just got it brand new for Christmas.. I am only using 5 of the 30 gigabytes.. I just uploaded a movie to it.. and when I was watching the sound stopped.. I didn’ t have time then to see if it was the movie or the pod so I turned it off and let it charge as it had been off the charger all night.. when I went to use it again the white screen is what I found.

71I have a video that I converted on my ipod and they play in itunes. Then I update my ipod. They won’t play, on my ipod? What do I do?
March 12th, 2006 at 5:12 pm
72Those having problems with videos and no sound need to check out a program like iSquint or something else based off this: http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net
The reason they aren’t playing is because the audio on many videos is not convertable cause it is in a format that iTunes and the iPod cannot understand. Convert them in an outside program and then put them in iTunes…

82i have a 20 gb ipod that i have not used for a few months. i charged it fully and when i turn it on, the apple comes on the screen and then i hear the hard drive come on, and then the hard drive goes off and the apple disappears and everything is off. When I try over and over again, the same thing happens – which I guess means that the battery isn’t dead?. Resetting by holding the play and menu button does not work. Any ideas?
thanks

83I keep trying to import a video that I downloaded into limewire, then transcoded with Videora into iTunes, but the video won’t copy onto iTunes. I am transcoding at MPEG-4>QC-VBR 544×408 resolution at 2500kbps, framerate of 29.97fps, and Qmin7, Qmax 2 (supposedly the best setting for ipod to TV). What am I doing wrong?

103I just bought my 30 GB Ipod about 3 weeks ago. As I was driving to work I was clicking forward pretty fast to get to the song I wanted to hear and the screen froze. The frozen screen says its “Now Playing,” but the timeticker isn’t moving and it isn’t playing. I’ve tryed holding meno and play buttons down for 20 seconds, tryed pushing all the buttons, setting it on hold, etc.etc. Is there a way to fix this? Luckily I got it at Costco, if it is a worst-case scenario.

124When I look in my library. I have 243 songs. But on my ipod, only 193. It’s not uploading all of my songs and it isn’t just downloaded ones, because it has uploaded some of them. It’s really bugging me, because it won’t upload my favourite song, or the whole of my From First To Last album. Help? xxx
June 16th, 2006 at 9:27 pm
125I have the solution to #125, if the songs are the ones that you have downloaded off such downloading programs then you have to do them a different way and that is where you open them from the Shared File.
June 16th, 2006 at 9:30 pm
126i also have just the ight thing for #124, when the video is done “clear” it and then go to iTunes, and click on “File” after tha click on “Add To Library” and it will be added to your library.
June 16th, 2006 at 9:32 pm
127#120, that is because you have to safely remove the hardware before you disconnect it.
June 16th, 2006 at 9:37 pm
128For any of you guys whos Ipods say “Do Not Disconnect” and you cant get that sign off, it seems to be frozen, well then plug your charger back in it, and on the bottom left of your screen, you will have an icon which is a green arrow, right-click that and click on “Safely Remove Hardware”, and then everything will be back to normal! And people, without “Safely Removing Hardware” your iPod will be less and less cooperative with you so keep everything on the SAFE-SIDE
June 18th, 2006 at 1:47 am

130why is it that every time you turn a nano on the apple logo appears before the main menu. but the ipod video only does it after a really long sleep? and how do i make the apple logo appear on my ipod video EVERY TIME i start it up?

131Erika, read #130
June 22nd, 2006 at 2:37 am
132Well, holding down the middle button and the menu button helped me re-boot it and get it off of the do not disconnect screen after I removed it from the computer so thanks for that answer. Also, for those with the video ipod, the hold button can be moved to the right to make the ipod not work and to the left to make it work.

135I have a 30g ipod video. I put movies on it, but when I try to play them, the screen gets completely messed up. Also, if I try to turn my ipod on, a blank white screen will appear, and there is no way to shut it off. the only way to get the menu is to connect it to the computer, and put more movies or music on it, but when I try to play it, the movies get all scrued up, so I shut it off. And when I try to turn it on again, the screen just goes white. WHAT DO I DO???

July 9th, 2006 at 10:46 pm
142Hey everyone, here are some solutions to your Ipod, when you get a video but it wont play any sound, you have 2 choices, youcan either look for it on Google (Google will play video and sound guaranteed) and you cal download it off of there, or you look for it in mp4 format, NO OTHER FORMATS WILL BE READ BY THE IPOD, ONLY MP4!!!
Now if your Ipod’s “Do Not Disconnect” sign wont go away, then simply just hold down the play button and turn it off and then back on, or plug it back in your computer, and on the bottom right there will be a green arrow. Click on that and then click on “Safely Remove Ipod” and then on “USB Apple Device” or something like that and then you will have it back to normal, “WITHOUT SAFELY REMOVING IT, IT WILL NEVER COOPERATE WITH YOU AGAIN AND IT WILL TURN CRAPPY!!!
iF THERE IS ANY OTHER QUESTIONS PLEASE NOTIFY THIS NUMBER

170HERE’S HOW TO RESET YOUR iPOD Video!
My iPod video would not shut off, no matter how long I held down the Play/Pause button. But a fix on the Apple site allowed me to “reset” the iPod, now it works fine.
Here is how I the Apple site told me to reset my iPod:
(1) Move the hold switch to Hold, then off again, apparently this hold switch toggle is important.
(2) Press and hold the Menu button (top of the wheel) and press and hold the select button (center of the wheel). After 6-10m seconds the Apple logo should appear. Release the buttons and wait for the unit to reset.
I don’t claim it will work for everybody, but it worked for me…

188I’m having the same problem as #54. My video ipod will not turn off. I press the play/pause button but nothing happens. PLEASE HELP!!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 4:32 am
189Usually most problems can be fixed by restarting the ipod. Switch the hold button on then off. After that, hold the menu button and the centre (select) button down at the same time for a few seconds. The screen should dim and then go black. Then you will see the apple logo light up on the screen and will boot back up into the menu with your problem hopefully resolved.
In addition: good practice is to make sure you have the most up-to-date software both on your computer and ipod. It’s all free so no excuses. Then hopefully the problems will be fixed by apple and will never return!

190I had the “do not disconnect” on the ipod. It’s a 30g i’m not sure what gen just that its color. It was my friend’s and he gave it to me. I unplugged it when my com was off and the display wouldn’t go away. So i opened it and disconnected the drive to reset it completely and now it shows the apple and goes to a sad ipod. I tried to hard reset it and that doesn’t work.

202My daughter transferred songs to her ipod nano but they don’t show up on the screen and so can not be selected for play. The songs do appear to be on the ipod since when she links it to her laptop she can view the contents of the ipod and the music files are there. How do you fix this??
October 26th, 2006 at 9:38 am
203I was charging my iPod using my laptop, whilst also on the internet, i think its a 4G iPod. so the laptop froze and had to be rebooted, however it was taking longer than i expected, so in my haste i just unplugged the iPod from the computer. it wasnt responding so i deceided to reset only for theiPod to only display the apple icon and refuse to go to the menu screen. What should i do….i’m going hysterical! i’ve had it for only about 3 months.
October 31st, 2006 at 11:21 pm
204SOLUTION: If your iPod will not turn on and your computer will not recognize it, just smack it against your palm and it should start working again. Sometimes the hardware comes loose inside, and 9 out of 10 times a solid whack will set things straight. I did this about two months ago and my nano has been functioning normally with no repeat problems since.

I have always ejected my iPod properly and I don’t understand what is going on. If anyone would kindly help me it would be greatly appreciated.

232To Fix the Song bug where you can not see songs under Artist is very simple but very tedious….
You Have to Make Sure that the songs you can not see have an ‘Album Name’
next to the Artist Name in iTunes, is a column named ‘Album’ notice how the song that do not appear have no name under ‘Album’ simply put the album name or whatever name you choose in that area, you can do this under you iPod list, not just the iTunes list from your computer….
Hope this Helps ^.^b

233Hi i have a 30GB video ipod and i tried downloading videos from limewire… I downloaded them and then put them through Cucusoft Ipod Video converter and whenever i try to drag the converted video into iTUNES it just closes on me and i cant put it in what can i do to put the video on my ipod?
January 15th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
234#236 Phil
are your videos in the *.mp4 format??
if so then the easiest way to get them into iTunes is to:
Click File in the top right
Click Add File to Library
Through the directory Find Your Video
Select and Click Ok
should now be listed in your iTunes list, all you have to do is drag the video under iTunes to your iPod…
Hope this Helps >.>

270I have a 5th generation ipod video, and I cant get it to turn on. the battery wont charge, and when I try to turn it on, it brings up the icon with the sad-faced ipod and the http://www.apple/com/support/ipod underneath. Also, it makes a clicking noise from inside, with pauses of about one second in between clicks, like this…”clickclick….clickclick….clickclick….”
My last resort is to take it into the genius shop at my local apple store, but I’d really love to be able to salvage my ipod by myself without having to spend any money. All help is appreciated, thank you!

277Hi I have 2 quick questions :-/
1) I have an iPod photo 60GB. My iTunes library says I have 5993 songs but I just synced my iPod and it says I have 5973….where are the 20 songs?
2) we are a family of 3 that all use the same iMac G5, each user has their own acct. How can I get my iTunes Library into my husband’s acct so he can listen to music w/o going into my acct? I also have iPod Rip but the iPod starts to sync everytime I hook it up and I can’t figure out how to manually manage the syncing :-(
thanks!

294When my dad was buying his plane tickets for Utah about 1 month ago, this little thing said he got a free silver ipod nano (2gb) and a ski helmet with speakers that you can hook up to the ipod. I’ve only had it for about 1 month. I haven’t enabled disk use yet and it uses Windows. Anywho, about 2-3 weeks ago, my brother let me download some songs (about 50-60) from his CDs. Now, since I used his account instead of mine, it asks me if I want to “Erase and Sync” or “Cancel” whenever I try to do anything. But that’s not the only problem, about 3 days ago, I tried listening to some songs but they wouldn’t play. YOu know how at the bottom of the screen it says how far you’ve gotten into the song (0:01, 0:02, 0:03) and so you know how much longer until the song ends? Well, it won’t even start. And you can hear any sound, even though the screen says “Now Playing”. If I press the play button it just says that its “stopped”. If I fast forward or rewind it just restarts with the apple icon. What the flip do I do? Its making me so mad. My boyfriend told me to restart it or plug it into the computer again, but IT WON”T WORK either.

322Hi,
I seem to be having some problems with my 30GB ipod.
I can charge it from the wall but when I plug it into the computer USB port it keeps restarting itself and making funny noises. I have tried to reset it, tried putting it into disk mode and formatting it from itunes.
I have been on this comp for 3 days straight trying to update my music files to my ipod but it is stuck.
This is sooooo frustrating. Someone please help.

330ok, so basically im gonna preach my iPod problem, but i have a feeling no one is going to help me. my ipod is my life and i need it fixed NOW. i have a 30gb white ipod and its amazing! i plugged it into my dock to charge the other day, and then there was a thunder storm and the electricity went out. since, my ipod has not come on. ive tried resetting it, plugging it into my computer..EVERYTHING. i took it to radioshack and they said that the best thing i could do is send it into apple. but i shouldnt have to do that just so they can rape it, and make me spend a couple hundred dollars for them to fix it, when i could just get a new one. so basically; I NEED HELP..BADD and NOW!!!
