Windows Vista P2P

It appears that Windows Vista is equiped with its own P2P network. In the Beta versions of the OS, it is turned on by default, however in the final release, it will be disabled.

The P2P sub-system uses Microsoft’s Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP) and is used to link machines in much the same way applications like Limewire, BitTorrent and the various instant messaging programs do. The software giant’s goal is the ability to provision network services without the need for a server.

The protocol is actually included in WindowsXP as part of the Advanced Networking functions.

So, what is this a trap to see who uses it? Sorry, but I’m not buying that MicroSoft is going to give their users a P2P program to do what they please with it. This seems more like yet another way to monitor people’s actions.

For example, is this what we’re going to be seeing from an MS Employee: Oh look! Joe Sixpack at 123 Lemondrop Drive (we know this because he actually registered his copy of Vista, of course) is sharing a copy of The Island with Bob Twelvepack at 456 Candyland Lane!! CALL THE RIAA STAT!!!

From the clip posted it looks like a Zero-Config set-up. Apple already has this with Rendevous/Bonjour and there are various implementations on *nix I believe. This implementation seems to have taken it a step further as most zero-config are fairly local. It also doesn’t state what exact MS is using it for.

It could be as Sven says, but I think that it’s more likely that they want to put some adds in that program to make some revenue out of it. There is probably a license agreement that gives you privacy rights, if there isn’t, people won’t use it, simple as that.

Microsoft is doing it because everyone is doing it, they aren’t inovative in anything, except bullshit of course.

i think thew whole thing sucks and it is way for them to look at what the hell you are doing and downloading and shit like that

i think we should rebel
