Have you ever cried due to a video game?

The Bowen Research group conducted a survey asking people if they had ever been emotionally moved by a video game. Surprisingly, MMOs weren’t at the top of the list. Instead it was the RPG genre that took the podium, and among it the Final Fantasy Series were by far the most emotional games of all.

In the list of individual titles was Resident Evil in second place, which makes perfect sense to me. I can’t remember how many times I jumped from my sofa whilst playing some of them (mainly the first game though) but the third game on the list was Halo. Halo? I mean… I played the whole game, I enjoyed it (except the final level) but I fail to see how it can move more people emotionally than Ultima Online for example.

To answer kotaku’s question on this scoop: Did you cry when Aeris died? Well, sort of, I didn’t burst into tears or anything but I did get quite sad, she was my favorite female character of all by far. I put down the controller and didn’t play the game until a couple of days after due to it.

The original Thief game was the first time I got that ‘I’m there’ feeling, to the point where I realised I was starting to hold my breath everytime I was hiding in the shadows.

Also, Thief 3 in the asylum was quite disturbing…

Jumped out of my skin when a zombie popped into view as I opened a door on the excellent System Shock 2.

Looking Glass Studios (RIP) realy knew how to involve you in there games.

Can’t say I’ve ever wept while playing a game though… apart from in frustration playing World Of Warcraft when I failed to get the Coif Of Elements – again :-/

Ask me in a couple of months. After I spend $500 on the xbox, I’m sure I’ll be crying every time I buy a game.

Thanks for being about the 5th or so place to spoiler the Aeris death for me!

thanks to knowing that before playing the part I wasnt especially moved.

Although on topic, I think anime more often emotionally moves me. Ive cried to a few.

definetly. the end of Secret of Mana on the SNES. I didn’t want that game to end… the end of FF7, and probably the end of some other square games, of course.

In FF8 when rinoa almost gets lost in space, I was in tears during that part of the game..(Mind you, I was about 9) Rinoa was by far my favourite characters, named by cat after her :) squal also takes part in a large section of my life..

Games have been always a way of entertainment, but maybe there are some few games with passionate scenarios that may make me abit touched. but crying? noway! as long as i can restart the game! no one really dies in games.

I have never cried over a video game actually. Moved, yes, getting a depression fit, yes, and even getting really really close to tears before your sister interrupts you, yes! but never have cried.

I got pretty moved in Final Fantasy 6 and 10 at a few dialogues, And Fatal Frame 3. (but Fatal Frame 3 wins those two by far).

Got really depressed in Fatal Frame 2. (e.g throwing the controller, not talking to anyone, not eating, lying all day etc)

And I was really close to crying in Silent Hill 3’s ending and in Grandia 3 when Raven dies…
