Windows Vista to Boot in 2 to 3 seconds
Wednesday, Sep. 28 2005 | Author: DaveI highly doubt they will ever be able to do this, but Microsoft is looking at speeding up the Vista boot time to around 2 to 3 seconds. Its a nice idea though, and if they improve boot speed, I am sure many people will be impressed. I am not one of those people though. I would happily wait two minutes for my system to boot if it was as solid as a rock, never crashed and could not be infected with viruses or any other malicious software, but that’s just me.
Fast On and Off: A Windows Vista computer starts and shuts down as quickly and reliably as a television, typically within 2 to 3 seconds. Windows Vista processes login scripts and startup programs and services in the background so you can start working right away. You’ll also shut down and restart your computer less often by using the New Sleep state, a simple one-click on and off experience which not only reduces power consumption, but also delivers and protects user data.

1So are all these login scripts, startup programs and background services completely unnecessary, or do you have to sit there staring at the desktop waiting for the computer to become useful? One of the main boot differences right now between Windows and OSX/Linux is OSX and Linux will bring up all the services and required services, and drop you in to a desktop you can start working in immediately. Windows quickly gives you a desktop that is at first completely unusable, then you can slowly crawl the mouse around and maybe even get the start menu to pop up, and eventually things will be loaded up enough that you can do more advanced work like open a web browser, or start MSN Messenger. If they want to really improve the end user experience they should be working with motherboard designers to phase out the ancient BIOSes we currently have and replace it with something lean that puts as much of the boot burden on the OS as possible, such as what LinuxBIOS does.

2Remeber when Microsoft told us that XP would boot in 5 seconds? I do.
It happened to me once, when I bought my new computer (state-of-the-art in 2005) and booted XP for the first time. But as soon as I started installing something else, it all faded away.
I suspect that it will be something similar with Vista. Sure, it will boot fast, but then you will need to keep it from any other software to keep that performance like that…

4Even after XP or any other Windows boots up we still have to wait for the “background scripts” as big M calls them to settle down. Usually I login and do something for about 30 seconds and then I start using the OS. It shouldn’t be like this, and I agree with Dave, I don’t mind waiting 2 minutes for an OS to startup if it’s usable and solid straight afterwards.

6I don’t trust Windows’ “sleep mode”. I could care less if it consumes less energy but I want it to be stable.

7i have a Dual Core 3.2 w/ HT and it will boot Xp Pro in about 6 seconds and with all my apps i can be using it within 10 seconds of pressing the powewr button!
3.2 Dual Core w/ HT.
4 Gigs Ram
mirrored 400gig HDD 7200RPM

Im not supprised, but then not many people have a 3.2 dual core, or even 4gigs of ram! we shouldnt have to use those specs to have a pc boot up in a resonable time frame

13i know theres a way of doing this… i made the setting yesterday but i cant remember how to do it …. if i run across it ill fill you in as well as microsoft cuz i called the on today and they didnt even know we could do that… it s a setting that allows a 30sec boot to be changed to what ever you want it the minimum i beleive was 10 sec but there really is a setting for this… ill keep digging
