I just wanted to let everyone know that I have a WordPress.com invite.
If you have used WordPress, and want to pass on a WordPress blog to someone on Blogger or some similar service to get them away from a free service that isn’t very good, then this is the mini-contest for you.

3) Scrivs is getting a laptop. Feb 24, 2005. Pretty useful, and nice to see the community at work.

WordPress.com is a free wordpress blog host. It is being run by the creators of the WordPress software. It is using what looks like a modified version of WordPress Mu mixed with WordPress 1.6.
Has everyone failed to notice that WordPress is some of the worst software ever written? I have.

I went back to this thread to look for “The Best of Forever Geek”, just found out about the film canister leyden jar! Anyways I checked out the WordPress site and it looks like they’re just giving away blogging space. I suppose I won’t win any contests today but I have been to the wordpress website and I would like to know what the big deal is. I’m a blogger user. I’m am fluent in xhtml, php, and do okay with mySQL. I’m still learning css and refuse to work with a bad website, even if it means someone else has to do the design work.
What I would like to know is this. What would I gain from moving to wordpress and would my lack of css knowledge leave me with a bad web site? I would love to move my site to mySQL. How are blogs stored at wordpress?
One other question. How does WordPress differ from Movable Type? Or for that matter, live journal, which I’m not really interested in anyway?

With the amount of themes out there for WordPress, you can easily edit one of the themes and have a great looking and for the most part unique website (or just blog)
WordPress has themes, pages, so you don’t just have your blog like on blogger. You can have an about page, and links page, all manageable from in WordPress.
All posts, and pages are stored in MySQL, which means everything is dynamic. That is the main way it differs from Moveable Type in that the pages in MT are static and have to be rebuilt each time a new entry is added.
Another big thing over blogger is plugins and expandability of wordpress. WordPress.com only supports a limited amount of plugins currently, but that may change as time goes on. WordPress the software supports a nearly unlimited amount of great plugins created by the community.
Anyways, read wordpress.org, check out some wordpress blogs, and you will quickly see the advantages. Atleast in my opinion.

There actually is a Blogger importer if I remember right. It can do entries, but not comments though. The importer will not work for the wordpress.com hosted service though.

Just so you know, wordpress.com totally sucks and is a major letdown. I think it is phony, and not supported by gpl or wordpress.org. I have had an account, and features have actually decreased. I reccomend if you want to use wordpress, to use blogsome. That or just stay with blogger for now.
