If you are a Gaim user you have probably noticed how the releases have been slowly been decreasing. Obviously the developers have lives but still I have been under the impression that the project was slowly dying or that they just lost the free time they had to develop it, however, just a few days ago they made a big announcement which is the upcoming release of Gaim 2.0.

Instead of focusing on small patches they decided to shift all their efforts to work on version 2.0, which, according them, will bring huge changes to status, include three new protocols and webcam/sound communication on the MSN Y! and Google Chat protocols.

They also say it will “fix every problem you ever had with Gaim”. Even though I find that very unlikely, due to it being multi-platform and too ambitious of a project (in terms of width and features) but it’s nice to see the team setting such high goal. They have (more than once) surprised me in the past, so I’m expecting something great from them.

They will feature freeze by the end of this month and over the course of November will do some Pre-Releases in order to iron-out eventual bugs so stay tuned for more news.
