Run Front Row on Any Mac

If you saw Steve Jobs give a keynote about the new iMac, then you know what Front Row is. As soon as I saw that I knew that I wanted to be able to run that on my Mac, but did not want to cough up the money for a new iMac G5. Luckily for me, someone figured out how to get Front Row running on any Mac running Mac OS X 10.3.9 – 10.4.x.

The first thing you’ll need to do is obtain a copy of Front Row. I can’t put it up for download here, for obvious reasons, but I’m sure you can find it somewhere…

After you obtain the Front Row folder, there will be a Front Row application. Make a copy of it, and drag it to /System/Library/CoreServices. Make another copy and drag it to your /Applications folder. Ignore the BezelServices.framework folder. There are two ways of launching Front Row, the first is to go into your Applications folder, and double clicking the Front Row application, then, while it is running press the “Escape” key. The second way, which I recommend, is to do this:

  1. Download Xkeys.
  2. Download this script and place the unzipped file in your applications folder.
  3. Open up Xkeys and choose your keyboard type, select the option when the F8 key is pressed…, then select launch the file/application and select Launch Front Row. Close out of Xkeys.

Now when you press F8 Front Row should launch.

  1. Jack says:

I was surprised this worked well on my G3 iBook – slow, admittedly, but Front Row is just about usable.

  2. Henrik says:

Cannot get it to work on my PowerMac G4 10.3.9

  3. Henrik says:

This error appears when trying to start front row from shell:

    HenriksMac:/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/MacOS root# ./Front\ Row
dyld: ./Front Row can’t open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/DiskArbitration.framework/Versions/A/DiskArbitration (No such file or directory, errno = 2)
    Trace/BPT trap

It seems this Framework has been moved from PrivateFrameworks in 10.3 to Frameworks in 10.4.

I tried to make a soft-link to the framework in the Frameworks dir, and a new error appeared:

    HenriksMac:/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/MacOS root# ./Front\ Row
dyld: ./Front Row can’t open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/DiskArbitration.framework/Versions/A/DiskArbitration (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

I have a rev 2 dual 1.8GHz G5 running Mac Os 10.4.2 and my coreservices folder is locked and i can’d modify it in any way. But with only one copy of the program in my applications folder, i was still able t launch the application.

  9. Curious iBook says:

I did exactly what is details in the instructions, and it works great. FrontRow launches on my iBook .. however, I still have to press “Esc” to get it to fully launch (if I only press F8, it puts the program in my dock, and shows “Front Row” in the top right corner).

Any way to get it to fully launch on F8?
