Jim Louderback has written an article about what he considers the top 10 worst gadgets of 2005.
In my opinion, some of them are spot-on, like the Oakley Thump sunglasses, or Sony’s and awkward “Sports mp3 player” which doesn’t really have much going for it except the brand name. However, one of the items intrigued me, which was the one on the #1 position:
1. Samsung Digimax V700: Samsung can seemingly do no wrong these days. The company has supplanted Sony as the top electronics brand, exuding both quality and cool. We hope this terrible digital camera is an aberration, not a sign of things to come. With slow performance, lousy auto-exposure, and some shutter lag, this 7.1-megapixel camera never should have been released. Compact cameras from Canon, Sony and Nikon are far betterâeven if they do cost a bit more.
I don’t remember ever reading awful reviews about Samsung cameras so I headed to dpreview for their review and ultimately they said:
It was a difficult call deciding whether to give the V700 a Recommended or Above Average, and ultimately it just, just scraped a Recommended, simply because it offers the best option for anyone wanting this kind of specification on a tight budget. We await the next ‘top of the range’ Digimax with interest.
Even though the flaws the author mentioned do exist in the camera I think he exaggerated a bit, a good camera doesn’t necessarily mean a person will become a good photographer.
