   Ok, I’ve purchaced Media Manager and tried it out. Here is a brief summary of my findings:

   Pros:
   1. Resonable user interface.
   2. Comprehensive. (Handles all media: CDs, photos, feeds,movies etc.)
   3. Simple to use.
   4. 1 click DVD conversion.

   Cons:
   1. I had to pay for this VERY basic manager. (It should be free).
   2. The video conversion is appalingly slow. (A standard feature length movie takes 6hrs+ as compared to; less than 1hr for PSP Video 9).
   3. MyPSP needs to be connected while movie conversion takes place. This means (a) I can’t use it during this time – 6 hrs!! (b) I have to my PSP hooked up to the mains as the battery won’t last long enough for this task. (c) I can’t convert a movie on my PC and transfer it later – which is what I want! (d) The movie only exists on the PSPs memory stick. If I want to store a library of movies on my PC I have to first convert each one to the memory stick and then copy it back to my PCs hard drive – with windows file manager I might add!
   3. The ‘feed directory’ lists very few feeds. (Eg. Under Audio:Music shows, there are just 2) It is not at all obvious how to add to the listed feeds. I want to be able to get a shoutcast directory listing and and select feeds from this but alas this is not supported. It appears that I have to locate feeds manualy with IE and then copy the URL into Media Manager.
   4. When movie conversion is taking place, my PC slows to a crawl.

   All in all, this is a pretty poor offering. I’m very annoyed that I paid for this software. I have yet to convert a DVD. It takes so long that I left my PC running overnight last night. Sometime during the night my PC received an automatic update from Microsoft which caused an automatic reboot of my PC. This means my PSP has just got a large corrupted file where my movie should be. This truly sucks.

   If you, like myself, think that this program should come bundled with the purchase of a PSP, send Sony a message to let them know about it.

   To contact their customer service department, go to the following site:

   Click on the ‘Consumer Services’ link under ‘Support/Consumer Services’. From the ‘Category’ drop-menu at the bottom, choose ‘Other’under the ‘Corporate’ heading. Click on ‘Continue’, and then submit your comment. I sent the following message yesterday:

   “I just purchased a PSP, and I am disappointed to learn that I will have to pay an additional fee if I want the software that you have designed to manage it. If Sony intends to compete in the multimedia market with other companies such as Apple, which provides it’s iPod management software for free, the PSP Media Manager should come with the purchase of the PSP itself. The fact that it does not suggests a short-sighted marketing strategy which disrespects customers who have already paid a significant amount of money for your product.”

   I received the following response today:

   “We value your input and appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Please rest assured that we will convey your feedback to Sony Computer Entertainment America’s (”SCEA”) appropriate management.”

   It is unlikely that much will come of my own individual complaint, but Sony may decide to change its policy if enough people voice their disapproval.
