Trend Micro has gone on record saying that RSS feeds will be the “next big thing” in worm attacks, especially after Internet Explorer 7 is released with its embedded RSS capabilities.
“The easy way of taking advantage of the popularity [of RSS] is to hijack the existing configured feed clients to automatically download new copies of worms and other threats to the infected computers. This is accomplished by pointing the already-configured client to different and malicious Web content,” Sancho wrote.
I wondered if this would happen or not. With the deep level integration into the OS that IE has, and the numerous security holes that are always going to be prevalent until they wisen up and disengage the browser from the OS, RSS will just provide an even quicker road into the users computer.
There goes Microsoft, ruining something else.

2I agree that if ill handed Vista’s RSS features will have many vulnerabilities. However, I don’t think we should talk about it, until we see the end result.

3IE doesn’t have a “deep level” of integration into the OS. Other than the fact that DLLs it ships with are used by other parts of Windows (like Add/Remove programs) it isn’t any more integrated into the OS than Firefox is once it is installed (nor any less).
The idea that IE has deeper acccess is a persistant myth.
