When everyone read that the Playstation 3’s “boomerang” controller was a concept design they were a bit relieved. However, this time it’s different. The console’s design we currently know and (most) love is in fact also a conceptual design.

What would you change on the current version?
I’d change the Spiderman 2 font on the side of it.

1Sony quality arguably has gone downhill, but I still have faith in their designs–even more so than Apple.

2I’m not that huge a fan of the design of either, the controller OR the console. I mean let’s face it, neither look as cool as the new Nintendo (imho), but I’m sure Sony could have done better. Both console and controller look like something from the future. That’s NOT good, by the way… :D

3I actually liked the boomerang controller.
It looks quite funcky, but when I imagine how it would feel to actually grap one of those in my hand… it would feel actully quite snuggly.
I probobly have to fight uncontrollable disire to throw it and expect it to fly back to my hand tho…

4I’d change the entire thing. I can’t stand the design. And we thought the Xbox was bad?!

7I don’t know why so many people hate the controller, it looks pretty average to me, and it’s not like they’re changing the buttons or anything, just the shape, and the new one seems to be able to fit better than the old one.
My favorite controller of all time was the Dreamcast’s followed closely by the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) one. In most current consoles it’s harder to make combos in fighting games than ever before.

8That is so interesting. I was not a fan of this design for PS3. IMHO, it looks exactly like the PS2, except slightly rounded. Think outside the box! But I suppose that’s the point, isn’t it: it’s just a rectangle, what can you really achieve when you’re bounded by these outdated concepts of design and reality that were imposed when the original VCRs were produced and still endure until today?
I applauded Nintendo when they unveiled the GameCube, so different. Even the Revolution is, dare I say it, revolutionary in its laid back design.

9There’s only so much Nintendo can fit inside the Revolution’s current design and size. I doubt the graphics will be a little, if any at all, improvement over the GameCube’s graphics.
And a Nintendo spokesperson said so also, something in the lines of: “you probably want to know technical specifications so you can compare with the other consoles, but we won’t say what they are right now, because frankly, they aren’t that important”.
And this surely means they’re betting everything on gameplay instead of fancy hardware and specifications.
With graphic driven gamers being the biggest slice of the cake is there enough market for a Nintendo console?
For me, the answer really depends on Microsoft’s performance in the current generation, and what kind of titles Nintendo brings out. If Nintendo starts getting more mainstream products such as the soccer games, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil with innovative features due to the controller, they might just take the second place in the podium and secure a position for the next round.
If not, all that Nintendo has going for it is their very successful Nintendo DS. And this isn’t the first time big N has relied upon their portable console to ensure a future for them. In 1998 Pokemon literally saved Nintendo due to the weak games their 64 bit system had (mind you, there were some really great titles, and I owned a Nintendo 64, however they weren’t enough to keep the interest up for the console for very long. I ended up buying a PS2 because there were great games coming out for it almost every month).

10I agree with the Spiderman font comment. That’s been bugging me since E3.

11I love the conceptual playstation3, for number one the ps3 conceptual looks sexy to me. And come to think the conceptual playstation3 is slimmer than the black one that’s in stores. And the conceptual ps3 has more huckups in the back. Well talk to u later.
