4Apple with HFS+ got rid of the external defragmenting in 1998, Linux hasn’t needed defragmenting since ext2 in 1993 (there is a defrag tool for it but it’s largely unnecessary, newer breed filesystems like ext3, ReiserFS, XFS, etc don’t even have defrag tools). Welcome to Windows in 2006! You’ll need at least three processors to handle the Windows firewall, Windows virus scanner, Windows spyware remover, Windows defragger, and maybe even run notepad.

6Using a flash memory as virtual ram would be pretty pointless; yes it can be accessed faster than the hard drive but no where near as fast as system ram.

7Of course, to run Vista at optimal level, you will need a system on par with the Macs that are coming out now, so why not just go ahead and switch to that.

From what I see so far, the only real reason to upgrade from XP is the eye candy, *if* your system can handle it. I hope they prove me wrong.

10The USB Memory device is a great fall-back idea until solid state HDDs come out. Should improve boot times considerably :)
The security center should be of great use to the n00bs who don’t even use a virus scanner while doing all kinds of crap on the net. Yes people like that still exist.
The Auto defragger should be a good thing, provided we can configure it so that it doesn’t run while we’re running Apps in the foreground.
What does “Of course, to run Vista at optimal level, you will need a system on par with the Macs that are coming out now” mean?
If you buy any mid-range system coming out today that’s still on par with a Mac that’s coming out now. Only thing other PCs haven’t really had standard that most Macs did was a discrete graphics card. But then most PCs didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
If you don’t care about the eye candy then you’ll be able to run Vista fine on current hardware.
Watching HDCP content however, is a whole new story however…coz you won’t be able to do that unless you have a brand new monitor and graphics solution that has the damned HDCP keys in it to begin with :(

I’m not a Mac fan, but the reason why they don’t write viruses for Mac’s and UNIX systems is because their security is so good… something windows has always lacked.
I agree with Adross, why are they still using a crap FS that fragments the buggery out of everything? Microsoft are really pretty naive, and don’t learn from any mistakes.
Go go magic open-source.

18The new WinFS (File System) was dropped in development to get Vista back on track schedule wise. It might be realeased as a service back later on. I believe it will do away with fragmentation all together! which is a needed thing for M$.
So far I’m liking Vista Beta 2 and find it much easier to install drivers and keep the system clean. It is best for home uesrs who know nothing about computers and need a hand through protecting against viruses and other malware.

19I myself, can’t wait until Vista comes out, but I just upgraded my computer to XP a few months ago and that costed enough! I have installed windows Vista’s appearance on my XP, so I don’t really care about it’s eye candy, but I do want to wait until it’s been out for a while to see how “AMAZING” it’s actually going to be.

20You guys are still forgetting some other features of Vista:
1. Vista has a comprehensive base of diagnostics that run in the background. Vista will tell you when your hard drive may fail soon, or your RAM is bad, etc. Reduces the extreme importance of RAID and nightly back-up.
2. 64-bit Vista: will run very smoothly and fast. Anyone stuck in 32-bit world, I feel sorry for. Help me out here, Mac’s don’t aren’t 64-bit, correct? When will they be?
3. Organization: everything you are looking for should be extremely easy to find. A far far better search engine will be in place. Even games have their own “Games” directory in the start menu.
4. Developer Productivity: I remember seeing somewhere that Vista will drastically improve Developers in their work. I only occasionally write a VB program, so I probably won’t benefit a whole lot, but that’s just me.
I’m sure there are other things that I didn’t mention and the rest of us haven’t that we’re overlooking, but oh well. I’m not a Microsoft fan, but I really don’t like Mac’s, and Linux is still just barely out of my relevant reach, so I’ll stick with Mikey for now. I think the problem with some Mac fans is that they get to hating Microsoft so much, they become so pessimisstic and don’t see any good that Microsoft can do. For one thing, I am an AMD fan, and AMD Mac’s don’t exist, correct? No, but Mac now supports Intel. Tisk. Not for me.

23Wow, what a bunch of immature little twits you all are. How is Vista going to affect Mac users? How is buying a Mac going to help people who actually like Windows? Macs certainly aren’t going to replace Windows machines anytime soon, and nor is Vista going to replace Macs.
In fact, I’d hazard a guess as to say that the final version of Vista will play better with Macs and Linux (and it’s an educated guess too, since I’m using Ubuntu Dapper, Mac OS X Tiger and Vista Beta 2 right now).
Why the hell does it need to be all Mac, all Linux, all Vista? OS wars are not a winner-takes-all game. I certainly won’t be throwing any of the big three OSes away anytime soon, because each one has it’s strengths, and more importantly each has it’s “firsts”, and I don’t want to be waiting around for important software to reach whatever platform I have hitched my wagon to, out of some stupid emotional attachment.
Learn to love diversity! It’s only through diversity that evolution occurs.

24I just want to see the day when all OS’s talk to one another without the need for extensive setup.
To date, Linux plays nice with NTFS drives…and that’s it, as far as I know.

>> This is nice, but RAM access time > What exactly does it do? Some nice graphics? pooh.. Only home users would fuss about graphics for this – and they hardly run any networks. Graphics may be good for some users, but the price in terms of hardware requirements is too much, IMO.

26My only concern when I heard about vista was that microsoft was just going to use the advancement in processing and ram to make a new OS with all the bells and whistles to make the slack jawed yokels go ooOoooo ahhhh, I was really hoping they would make a sleak functioning os that would utilize the dual processor to make an efficient, fast functioning, and low maintenace machine where defrags and bugs would be a thing of the past and background features would be cut down. But now it seems like if I want to run Call of Duty 2, msn, and maybe mozilla at the same time it’s going to result in more lag because I’m also running a defrag while sending annonymous user info back to microsoft ammong whatever else they decided would be cool to throw in. Thanks microsoft, now I need a 700$ processor, new video card, heat sink, and over 2 gigs of ram just so my computer can keep up with my multi tasking.
It seems like everything is getting too big and complicated on limmited foundations. I apreciate the simple elegance of macs, and the freedom of linux, but I feel too confined using them. I just wish microsoft would stop being so damn gimmicky and start catering to the more competant computer users by learning something from its competators. Having them depend on their quality instead of their marketing and business departments would be nice too. Id love to smack bill and say look at what you’ve got, look at whats wrong with it, FIX the damn problems, and release a better version of XP before you go showing off like you are with vista.

You act like, “Oh man Vista is out, now I HAVE to buy it.” And if you don’t like the features, don’t get it? Easy as that. Everyone is making a case, “Oh wow a new start menu who cares?” …great. Good addition to the comment board. Now say something that is actually worth reading. You don’t know what it will be like, you haven’t tried it. Do you think that is ALL the improvements they’ve made? Honestly.

29Jesus!!… how dumb can you all be… 1. Vista will run fine even on old processors
2. vista can be configured not to defragment while playing games an such… and 3. vista is using my 1 gb of memory far better than XP ever could…. and a last thing…. Linux & Mac Users are never going to experience the games as they were meant to be played because Linux are just to much opensource and Mac is just to much Multimedia

30ive used the beta, Vista sucks for 1 reason, you cant install anything you want, it will prevent you from installing say the WMP9 codecs (needed for some games such as “the bards tale”) it will simply delete your install and say it was out of date, im sorry but if i want to install something ill do it, screw off microshaft

31Yeah…. Windows sucks…. Mac’s rule… that’s why Macs are the most popular and common computing solution in the world today, huh?
The only people to listen to, are the ones saying that neither sucks, they’re both good, and both have flaws, for different reasons.
Mac fanboys slam Windows just because it’s not OSX, and vice versa. Apparently we should all be using the exact same OS, exact same computer, with no options except for maybe HDD size, and amount of RAM.
Microsoft is what it is for a reason. Let it be.

32To all of you Windows-bashers out there:
Mac OS is pretty, and extremely simple to use (”Preschoolish”, if you will). I might give my grandmother a Mac. But that’s it. It’s just not functional enough. There’s WAY more software and hardware for Windows. You think Mac OS has less bugs? Wrong. You don’t see them because nobody cares to write malware for the Mac. It’s not profitable because there are hardly enough Mac users out there. “Oooh…look, we got some of this suckers iCrap!”
And the real kicker? These new Macs are nothing more than over-priced, over-glorified PCs. You’re paying top dollar what us Windows users have right now: Intel Hardware.
You think Gates is a snake? The Mac OS X EULA forbids you to use the OS on anything but Apple branded hardware. Ouch. That’s really bad for the consumer, you’re paying a high price to make up for Apple’s lack of market share.
Linux? Linux is cool, I guess. :o) I use it at work and home. However, I still have YET to see a Linux distro that runs faster than Windows, and it’s certainly not the OS to use if you are into games.
And finally, if you think Windows sucks for any of the following reasons:
1. It’s unstable.
2. It’s slow.
3. You get viruses.
You should probably learn how to use your computer before opening your mouth.(Or Better yet, buy a Mac!) I haven’t had a virus, or a slow/unstable computer since Windows 98.
