How Many Websites Do You Visit?

When I get up in the morning I have a routine of around twenty websites and over two hundred feeds that I read, but I am not the average internet user. An article on Techdirt points out that most users only have around six websites that they visit regularly.

As people are settling in to their internet usage, it appears that many have a pretty small set list of sites they visit each day, and that’s it. A study in the UK found that 51% of surfers visit six or fewer websites on a regular basis.

He also says this is a good thing as users are learning what sites they love and they stick with it. What do you think? How many sites do you visit regularly, and do you track a site over the long term?

  1. I think this research is on the mark, if you take out RSS subscriptions. I have more RSS subscriptions than I care to count, but only have a few non-RSS sites that I frequent. I don’t think it’s even as high as 6 for me.

*counts* hmm, about 20 I guess, including this one

I only regularly visit a site if it has no RSS feed, or if it’s not nicely deliverable through RSS (forums, etc).

Most of my RSS feeds are relatively low traffic (I can’t keep up with slashdot, boingboing, digg etc) so I have a bunch of feeds which generally I find interesting and don’t often overlap, and the higher traffic sites I just visit every now and then when I’m bored.

I have a bookmark folder called the Daily Cycle – middle click on it in Firefox and my 15-20 daily must-views are ready for review in tabs.

    Yours is one :)

Firefox has a little arrow on the mid-top righthand side that when the bookmarks toolbar gets full reveals a list of links when clicked. This is my “morning surf list”. ForeverGeek.com is the first place I check (always interesting stories here!!!) and I have about 6 or 7 others I check as well and throughout the day, including digg.com.

I probably visit in the neighborhood of 15-20 websites daily, not counting my RSS feeds. Counting feeds I probably monitor close to 150 websites. But some days I don’t even go to the internets. Rarely.

I use the bookmark toolbar in FF and open the 10 sites left to right usually keeping the next one loaded in a tab. Every so often a site gets skipped for a while depending on mood and the time available for the daily-browse, so it normally ends up being 7-8 per day (on a weekday at least).

  8. ehmmm….31….32 with this! ;-)

There are around 5-10 sites which I follow everyday. But, it really depends upon the amount of information that I am looking for. If I need some specific information desperately, I might even visit 30-40 websites in a day.
