Just because certain members of a given community have more influence over the direction of the community doesn't mean that it is not a democratic community. I agree that there are a small group of users at Digg that have a disproportionate amount of influence in getting stories to the front page, but the average user still has a say in the process. It is just that the influential users have a larger network that will support their stories.

It is just like real life. In US politics every person can participate in the democratic process of electing government officials, but not everyone has the same amount of influence. People with more social capital will more easily spread and popularize their own ideas and garner support for the candidate of their choice than those with a weak social network. Does this mean that our system is not democratic? I don't think so. Certain people will also have more power regardless of the system.

Yes, but the GFDL has a concept of invariable sections, which means that Wikipedians can claim a section to be invariable, and stop any forks from doing anything to that section.

Simen, forks are always possible. Wikipedia itself is a fork of Nupedia, and Wikitruth is a fork of Wikipedia by some angry contributors who didn't like Wikipedia's editorial style. The possibility of forking is a one of the central strengths of open source software and other open development projects, but it mostly works through the great incentive to avoid forking because it is also very destructive to split development efforts into two or more competing camps.

And these type of post I like to read the most - geek / tech news are cool, but I prefer to read some comments / thoughts.

Keep on, great job.

Regarding your point about wikis, many are licensed in such a way that someone could fork them if they didn't like the way they're headed. Wikipedia is licensed under the Gnu Free Documentation License (but then again, that's not free enough for Debian, and I'm not sure if they're right in their claims, so that might still prevent people from doing a fork). It does allow a concept of "Invariant Sections", so I'm not sure.
