Kingdom Hearts 2 – First Impressions

The game of the moment for all PS2 owners (and their girlfriends) is certainly Kingdom Hearts 2. The eagerly awaited sequel to one of Square-Enix and Disney’s best games and stories ever.

For those that don’t know what Kingdom Hearts is, it’s the story of young boy that is chosen as the “key holder” and has the power to seal the doors that connect various worlds.

These worlds, are the worlds you see in all of Disney’s movies, like Tarzan, Little Mermaid and etc. Besides having the mission of sealing the doors, he is also on a quest to be reunited with his lost friends, his female friend Kairi (which he seems to have a special fondness for), and his best friend Riku which succumbed to the powers of an evil man.

But what sets this game apart from other Disney stories or S-E games? Well, for starters, it’s one of the few S-E games that actually has direct sequels to the same story. Secondly, the story is deep and somewhat confusing. And if you played the first game and found that it was shrouded in a lot of mistery, KH2 seems to be even more. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad thing, well, at least not for now, they still haven’t exaggerated it too much, and I feel that it adds a good ambiance and twist to the otherwise “kiddy looking” game.

The graphics haven’t evolved that much from KH1, but then again, there wasn’t much to evolve. The scenarios, in general, don’t look more complex, but the character look even more alive than before, and certainly went through some cosmetic care.

The gameplay (for now) remains faithful to the first game, which is good, since KH had such a great gameplay. But now it has a couple of new twists, such as special “trigger” abilities you can use during combat to dodge attacks or perform special moves. I haven’t reached too far in the game yet, but I’ve read that you acquire double weapon wielding capabilities in the future, so those should add some spice to the game also.

Story wise, the game begins in a very similar way to KH1, almost too similar at times, and you can’t help but wonder what the meaning is behind all. I don’t want to spoil anything, but so far the story has been as intriguing and fun as the one from the first game.

So there you have it. It may look a bit kiddyish, but hey, it’s Disney, and it’s not like Square-Enix isn’t trying to give the game a more serious image with this sequel, but if you enjoy great RPGs, or your girlfriend simply forced you to buy the game. Give it a try, you won’t regret it.

I give this game the official ForeverGeek stamp of approval! And as soon as I pass it I’ll write a full detailed review of it.

Being a fan of games such as teh silent hill and resident evil series I’ve stayed fairly clear of cutsey games (not all girls are soppy *wink* )

If you’re saying however that this isn’t just a cutesy girly game maybe I should give it a shot?

@Tim – No, I’m a big fan of the Kingdom Hearts.

@P – Well, I think that it’s safe to say that this game is real-time Final Fantasy game set in the Disney universe.

Now it’s up to you to judge if Final Fantasy games are “cutsey” ;)
