I am a big fan of solar power and other renewable energy sources, and so it bugs me that there is currently a shortage in the polysilicon solar panels. I am really hoping that Solar Panels are going to really take off in the next few years and the article talks about the upcoming technologies as well.
A shortage of polysilicon solar panels, those mirror-like panels seen most often on the top of buildings, will continue to crimp the potential for solar energy for a second straight year, according to a report from investment bank Piper Jaffray.
Alternative solar technologies, such as thin-film solar panels, however, will begin to pick up the slack in 2007 and allow the industry to accelerate again.
I wonder how many people would be considering using Solar Panels for their houses over the next 3-5 years as energy prices continue to rise.

1Silicon is expensive and inefficient – we’ve pretty much squeezed all we can from silicon. If the shortage of pannels teach us one thing – its time to start making new non-silicon panels; maybe made with organic materials or nanotubes.
Also, panel makers are hesitant to make large investments in an area that depends so heavily on shaky government incentives.

2Thanks for the comment CaptnSaj, I totally agree with you on everything you said. I think that other technologies that can harvest more energy from the suns rays, and especially if its cheaper to mass produce would be perfect about now. I would love to get my house covered in solar panels to power a large portion of my daily energy needs, but you are right…the government incentives just are not there…and the ones that are…are just too hard to get.

3At the moment the area of panels that are needed for the average houses consumption would not fit on a roof either, desite the cost.
