Hawking Says Humans Must Go Into Space

Stephen Hawking is such an interesting guy, but his faith in humanity to sustain itself on this mothership called Earth leaves a little to be desired. In a recent conference he basically said that the survival of the human race is dependant on us finding a new home elsewhere in the universe because we might kill ourselves off in the next 100 years from global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of.

Not a happy thought, but one that many of us should keep in the back of our minds as we realize the possiblities of a bird flu pandemic, global warming issues, new development of nuclear weapons, and our increasing understanding of genetics.

What do you think, will humanity survive the next 100 years?

“Star Trek: Enterprise” is starting in year 2150. ;)

I’m not so sure we’ll last 100 years. I have 2 kids, and I’m scared for the future we are sculpting for them.

It would definitely be nice to have a backup plan. Just for peace of mind.

The planet can not indefinitely sustain the current rate of growth & consumption assonated with that growth. Something’s got give, the question is will the human race make the necessary changes, and correct this imbalance, or will Mother Nature do it for us?
