Google WiFi Begins

Katie Fehrenbacher from GigaOm was invited this morning to try out Google’s WiFi in Mountain View and so far it is a thumbs up. There are still some kinks to be worked out, but Google will pin down most of them soon, I am sure.

I think Google’s WiFi project is interesting, but not the greatest. I am already seeing competition pop up from the normal ISP’s, as they try to get a piece of the pie.

So I’m posting this from Rengstorff Park in Mountain View and the connection is pretty good: between 2 and 3 bars out of 4 on my Mac. Works well enough from here. I might drive around a bit and follow the nifty map that Google set up and update this post later. I won’t divulge how to get onto the network, but trust me it’s a no-brainer, even though right now trusted testers can’t see the SSID number.

Who out there would be interested in Google’s WiFi?

I don’t know how I’d feel about logging into my bank, etc from a free open wireless point. Especially one that you *know* stores everything you do.

But if it came to Boston, I’d definitely give it a try ;-)

I would like it. it would be better then the not so great free eastlink wifi we currently have.

I love it – since I secure my connection at any public hotspot via a VPN software called iPig. The endpoint of this VPN is my iPig server installed on my home PC, so everything is in my hands ;)
