Hideo Kojima on the Wii

Konami’s creator of Metal Gear, and one of the driving forces behind the Playstation 3, is not impressed by Nintendo’s Wii.

In an article found at Advanced Media Network, Hideo Kojima compared the upcoming PS3 to a Movie Theater, the Xbox 360 to a top-flight home theater, and finally, the Nintendo Wii to a television set which picks up local stations. He then went on to say that the Nintendo Wii had no place in the future of video gaming.

“If you think about the future of the industry and game creators, I get the feeling that the winner had better be the movie theater — or, the PS3. No one will say that the price is cheap. However, the PS3 is ‘the future.’ The Wii is interesting, but in terms of functions, it’s a machine with past concepts.”

While Kojima doesn’t seem too impressed with the competition, that didn’t keep him from licensing Solid Snake out to appear in Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii.

I think Konami owns the rights to the MGS franchise, not Kojima. So Snake could have been released for Super Smash Bros even if he had objected to it.

    They wrote that incorrectly.

“The Wii is interesting, but in terms of functions, it’s a machine with past concepts”

    should be

“The Wii is interesting, and it’s hardware is comparable with the best of the former generation, yet the concepts are at the least, innovative.”

Of course, to make it fit the opponent style of talk I assume they’d make it.

“The Wii is interesting, yet it’s hardware is comparable only with that of the former generation”

I know this is dated but it’s interesting to point out Kojima’s comparison of the PS3 to a movie theatre, he goes on by saying the PS3 is ‘the future’. But as far as movies go – at least in hollywood – the industry is somewhat declining into a depression. If this comparison rings true, what will this mean for the PS3?
