Intel was not planning on releasing their quad-core processors codenamed “Kentsfield” and “Clovertown” until the first half of 2007, but now there are reports that it could be coming out sooner, maybe as soon as Q4 of 2006.

They are really trying to keep AMD at bay by releasing better and better products in shorter windows of time, to keep their lead, as well as continue to stay fresh in the minds of the marketplace.

Yesterday, after publishing disappointing Q2 FY2006 results, Otellini said: “We’re pulling in both the desktop and server [launch] of the first quad-core processors into the fourth quarter of this year from the first half of 2007.

Clovertown is expected to be pin-compatible with the recently released ‘Woodcrest’ dual-core Xeon DP 5100 family of server chips. Clovertown is believed to have a TDP of 120W, more than Woodcrest’s 85W, and it’s been claimed server makers are designing their systems for the four-core chip. If Intel ships the chip early, their move will have proved a smart one.

Almost seems like they are moving too fast again to think about buying a new computer… And I am still waiting to see what AMD comes out with to compete with all these new CPU’s from Intel.
