Powerpuff Girls Z: Episode #1 Review

Powerpuff Girls Z: Episode #1 Review

The first episode of Damashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z (“Take off! Powerpuff Girls Z”) premiered in Japan a few weeks ago and it didn’t take long for the thing to hit the internet for the whole world to see. So far, the only version available is the Raw Japanese version (no fansubs, yet), but luckily, I’m rather good with the Japanese language, so I had no trouble understanding it. Additionally, the plots and dialogue aren’t particularly complicated, so in all honesty, it’s not hard to follow even if you can’t speak Japanese.

Opening Sequence

Episode #1

Ending Sequence

The episodes follow the same format as the American cartoon series; they’re about 8 minutes in length. Several gags from the American series make the transition; the Mayor being an incompetant boob, Ms. Bellum’s face never being seen, the overall lack of seriousness, etc. Some changes have been made on a more than visual level. Professor Utonium now has a son who helps him around the lab, the hotline (that clown-faced telephone) has been replaced by a robot dog named “Peach” who alerts the Powerpuff Girls of danger by activating their belt-buckles with a sonic howl. The episodes still end with the heart-motiff, though the Powerpuff Girls give us a good bye message instead of a narrator.

And here’s a look at the character-redesigns for the Rogues Gallery.

Powerpuff Girls Z: Episode #1 Review

Front Row: Big Billy, Grubber, Mojo Jojo, Princess, Li’l Arturo, Ace and Him

Back Row: Sedusa, the Rowdy Ruff Boys, Fuzzy Lumpkins, Snake, Abra Cadavar.

I only take issue with a few of the redesigns. Abra Cadavar isn’t much of a zombie anymore and just what the Hell is Snake wearing!? Fuzzy Lumpkins has undergone practically no change what-so-ever, which is cool. The Rowdy Ruff Boys look great, and check out Sedusa’s rack. Princess’ afro is startling, while Him has a marrionette/puppet-thing going, which may or may not work. Mojo Jojo just looks hardcore (though he’s still just as goofy as ever in the actual show). The Gangreen Gang, for the most part, look just fine. Overall, I like most of their redesigns.

As far as the plot of episode 1 is concerned, it was really just a “Hey, meet the Powerpuff Girls…again!” sorta introduction. Mojo Jojo kidnaps a bunch of kindergartners and steals their candy. Peach alerts the Powerpuff Girls (high school students, now) and they head off to stop him. But, of course, nothing’s ever that cut and dry when the Powerpuff Girls are concerned. They arrive and sign autographs for the captured children. Mojo tries to give them his autograph but the kids just cry. Mojo and the PPG fight it out, but run low on energy. So everybody in the show has an ice cream break with their favorite flavor listed in katakana at the bottom of the screen. Refreshed, they kick Mojo’s butt and send him packing.

Like I said, not very complicated or clever in the plot-department, but again, this episode really just serves as an introduction piece. I’m sure it’ll pick up once we see some more villains. The jokes are quirky but in a very Japanese fashion. Japanese quirkiness and American quirkiness are two very different things. But hey, we had a talking dog in our version, they have a talking fish. Go figure.

Anyway, the show is kinda “eh” right now. I think I’ll like it a lot more when/if it hits American TV, providing they dub it with the voice actors from the American series.

  1. I haven’t seen much of the original series, but did it focus on Blossom as much as this series does?

I think the opening song sucks. Outright.

I got some serious “Sailormoon” vibes at a couple of points, especially when they first call out to Mojo (“埅ちなさい”). The henshin sequence itself could be humorously dubbed:

    “Moon Prism Power …”
    “Venus Power …”
    “Mars Power …”
    “… MAKE … UP!”

… without little trouble. (Come on, I designed that considering the positions and personalities of the girls, even.) And you could change the SM henshin music from singing “Seeraamuuuuun” to “Burasamuuuuuu.” But I disgress, and in a most otaku-like manner at that.

The ending was better than the opening, but still not very engaging, I think.

So far, I prefer the original. Seeing this dubbed with the original voice actors would take the bizarreness yet up a level. I’d like to see that.

What the heck was with the ice cream break?

  2. Jo Lanza says:

Well as for the Sailor Moon nostalgia. The character designers are from the Anime of Sailor Moon. Like bubbles hair, resembles Usagi’s. Bubbles like Ami’s. But those are just coincidences. But this is the japanese version of an american hit. It is only being supported by the cartoon network, and the original creator isn’t involved, which is why you might see a lot of the same, and a lot of differences.

To me i think that the first episode was pretty good. It is a kids show, i can tell, but fun, and bubbly. We just have to see how far this will go.

  3. KirbyMeister says:

I hated it! What a stinker! They turned my favorite childhood toon and turned it into a Sailor Moon ripoff… and the punchy-kicky violence was totally destroyed. Sexism anyone?

  4. Evil Sonic says:

I like it, and it wasn’t ruined like other people it was, because the oringinal creator designed the characters

  5. Dogzie says:

I hate the Japan version of PPG!
    It’s too…..uhm….Go Go gadget-like.
AND THE ROWDYRUFF BOYS! WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THEM!
    They look gay…….
Besides , superpowers are cooler then a jojo, a hammer and (omg , how pathetic)a bubbleblower…..
(And I liked Mojo small, like a cute monkey)

    xxx

  6. Martin says:

Hmm I was upset about the change at first, but than again, I enjoyed the first few episodes. Even though they arn’t in grade school anymore, it’s still pretty cute and fun! I just hope they don’t change the story plot too much, but overall it is a great story. Just building up each character a bit, more character depth now that the characters are in middle school (I think). Hehe I do miss the mayor’s old character, and the preschool teacher but who knows? Well yeah XD.

  7. I love the Powerpuff Girls very much they are so cute and I wonder if the 4KIDS Entertainment, Ban Dai or TAJ Production Voice Actors can do this.

  8. A_girl-with_no-face says:

This show sucks and whoever made it should just die.It should’nt even be called ppg it should just be called demashitaa z cuz it is nothing like power puff girls.I hope that this show never makes it to america and all of you people who say that it is good your fucking idiots and the only reson why you like it is because it’s all “animeish” it’s a disgrace to the original ppg and I hope you all burn in hell.

    KTHXBAI.^O^

  9. Mark Pellegrini says:

If you’re getting this worked-up over a Japanese cartoon you might want to look into some decent therapy. Or at least make an effort to grow up ever so slightly. Anonymous internet threats are magnificently pathetic.

  10. A_girl-with_no-face says:

Thanx I’ll look into that therapy thing.Oh and your telling me to grow up when you like such a childish show?

    HA!

    you make me giggle.^^

  11. Mark Pellegrini says:

Actually, I get paid to watch and review “childish” shows, rather than spend all my free time on blogs complaining about them. It’s called a “job”, which is something we grown-ups use to pay bills. If you have any more questions about jobs or employment then I recommend you direct yourself to Dictionary.com.

  12. A_girl-with_no-face says:

Oh hush you silly little otaku, why don’t you go get a real job instead of watching cartoons for a living and argueing with people over the interweb.

    The show sucks.

    I’m entitled to my opinion.

Now,why dont you go in your room and masterbate or whatever pathetic otakus like you do.

  13. Mark Pellegrini says:

Interesting analysis. Had you actually read my review you might have realized that I saw potential in the show, not that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. And if the job pays me enough to make a living and it is something I enjoy doing, then I would qualify it as a “real job”. After all, not everyone gets paid to do what they enjoy, so I consider myself very fortunate.
You must be very sad and small if all you have to do with your time is pick fights on internet blogs and spray childish remarks which not only display your level of maturity, but your poor grasp on the English language, as well.
And of course you are entitled to your opinion, I fail to see whre anyone has tried to take that away from you. But, of course, if your opinion is weak and filled with childish nonsense and personal insults/threats, then anyone out of grade school should expect to have it challenged.
    Enjoy your Saturday.

  14. A_girl-with_no-face says:

Whats with etilist using the”poor grasp on the english language” thing, and you call me sad and small when your sittng around writing reviews about anime.I wonder what your kid will think of you “hey guys my dad writes anime reviews for a living!” “omg god your so cool!” bitch please.and if you realize that i’m entitled to my opinion why are we still argueing about this? why is anime freaks so immature?

    Blah.

    you bore me,see ya! ^^

  15. Mark Pellegrini says:

I dunno. I think my kids will be proud that their father has a job where he can express his opinions on a global medium, get paid enough to provide for them and enjoy his employment. But of course, we’re speaking hypothetically, here, since you’re bringing children that don’t even exist into the equation.
And why did I bring up your terrible grasp on spelling and grammar? Well, simply to prove a point. You’re desperately trying to attack my “maturity” due to a single anime review I wrote, yet you, yourself, are incapable of stringing together a handful of coherent sentences. Anybody who has graduated high school (or possibly middle school) should be capable of patient spell-checking.
And, had you done a small thing called “research” before making your claims of “otaku” and “anime freak”, you might notice that anime only factors into a small amount of the media I watch and review. But I suppose asking you to know what you’re talking about is just asking too much.
Anyhow, this has been fun but I’ve got work to do. Have a nice day. : )

  16. anime watcher says:

this could make me a ppg fan

  17. Deven711 says:

I thought it ruled. The girls looked hotter, the animation was better, the music was cooler, and the theme song was greater. Overall, this anime rules.

  18. Nightmare669 says:

I enjoy it. No it isnt the same as the original ppg but thats to be expected. Whats the point of creating PPGz if its going to be like PPG? I see a lot of downfalls in this but I also see the upside. I enjoy how they were drawen and how they dont focus on blossom as a leader (at least to me they dont) I love how they all have their own unique personalitys, also that they are older and starting to learn about the world, how the storyline has more of a plot, also I enjoy they arnt sisters, and how not EVERYONE knows they are the ppg. The downside is they dont do hand to hand combat which kinda takes away from the fight scenes, I really dont enjoy the weapons, how they turned the Ameoba boys into two guys and one girl, or how mojo jo jo came out, but over all I think he has promise to become something good. No not better then the original but better then expected.

  19. Hraefn says:

Honestly, I found this anime to be a bit weird, but only because I’m so used to the US version myself. However, like one reviewer [on another website] said, if you start to think of it in a “What if the Japanese got the idea of PPG before the US did?” kind of way, then it’s not too bad, really. Not much different from such anime as Ojamajo Doremi, when you think about it.

If there’s anything I seriously didn’t like about this series, it’s that they turned Mojo Jojo into a running joke. Pity, that, since he was one of my favorite characters in the original. =^^=

  20. Hraefn says:

P.S. Oh, yeah, and also the fact that the PPGZ are limited in their powers that they need a dog to give them *permission* to use their powers. Rather inconvenient for emergencies, I say, but hey, it’s their show. =^^=

I really enjoy this new PowerPuff. It may not be what die-hard PPG fans like but think about it, wouldn’t this be a little more realistic? After all, this isn’t made for the age I am (which I will not reveal but it is over 10) but for younger kids. This will make an excellent Anime so as long as English dubbing doesn’t ruin it. Which I doubt. Besides, Powerpuff Girls needed something to boost their viewers. And they sorta looked creepy without fingers. I am not saying I don’t like them but I mean, this is a lot more interesting to me.

And after a while, they won’t need that puppy by the way. I went on YouTube and saw the first 16 or so episodes. If you look for the 20th one, that is the one with the RowdyRuff Boys! ^_^

  23. Anonymous says:

Oh yeah by the way, if you look more closely, that’s not Abra Cadavar. That’s the Ameoba Boys + Girl. I don’t see why they are in one outfit though. And I think it’s funny they made one a girl. I think the Ameoba Siblings make more sense.

  25. BlackAmeriJapGirl says:

That’s not a good pic of the vllians because that’s the screen shot of the ending song where everyone is going to a party. The one in the beginning is better because it shows everyones normal clothes. Like princess has her signature curly pigtails and everyone else have what o more casual clothes.

u can see the show on youtube.com just search powerpuff girls z

  29. Ami says:

Hey this show is not childish I love this show I don’t thank it is childish I thank this show is cute

  30. coco34 says:

well it is ok but i hate wat they did to the story. The ppg are not sister but the rowdy ruff boys are? That is a bush of crap.

  31. coco34 says:

opps i meant the pgg are not sisters but the rowdy ruff boys are brohters.

  32. tom says:

    Hi cool site friends!

  33. Sienna Maiu says:

AbraCadaver? Isn’t that just the Ameoba Boys wearing a trench?

  34. dez says:

“abra cadaver” is the ameoba “boys” in a trench caot, and the ameoba “boys” names are lady(the girl duh), fancy hat or top hat(the one with the black hat), and poncho (hes the one wearing a pancho).

I love this seriers and not just because i love just about any anime but because its actually good, I loved the origanals but… this one is like… im gonna go with better, just cuz their actually humans not some bug eyed, fingerlass, freaks made from some lonely old guy that mixed sugar, spice, and every thing nice, and was pushed by his lab assistant monkey (why would you let a monkey run around your, baka) into a chemical tube or what ever the hell was containing chemical x, and got that mixed in. no they saved little kids from being hit by a mysterios light shooting out of the sky. (which for all they no could have been death lazers, just pointing that out)

and those of you that dont like that their not sisters, screw you, that has a lot to do with the story line, and the boys are brothers because mojo still created them, even though this time it wasn’t from snails dog tails or what ever the hell it was, but this time he used the girls stuff and threw it into a monster making machine, (which says a lot about the boys if you think about it) and out came 2 hot boys and a blond wimp.
and if your a fan of the traditional coules of butch and buttercup, bllossom and brick, boomer and bubbles, then you should be happy because now each couple could date with technically dating someone in their family. because as soon as one couple got married (or just together, i’m not saying they need marriage) then they would all be related.

    suck on that bakas ^-^

  35. bluestar4eva says:

cool!! i wish i could watch it on T.V

  36. THE Alex says:

Well I didn’t really like the anime mostly because I grew up dancing like a lunatic whenever PowerPuff Girls came on. The fight scenes were obviously majorly lacking. Everything related to fighting was pretty bad and I hated it. The weapons- don’t even get me started on that.

I know that the PowerPuff Girls not being sisters was crucial to the plot, but that was seriously terribley. The weather suddently started messing up (and a glacier appears in what- 2 minutes?) and they are hit by beams of light. The fact that they weren’t sistersjust really messed it up for me. I mean, what if they aren’t together and HIM comes along and decides to blow up the world?

The thing that pisses me off the most is the crucial charater that is missing THE NARRTOR!!!! I always laughed my butt off whenever the narrator said something funny. To fit the look of the show they probably would need a diffrent sounding voice, but it would defiantly work. Remakes aren’t spoused to be exactly like the original, but leaving the narrator out was a big mistake.

Those are really the only things that made me want to throw computer out the window. The only thing that really outshines the original a lot is the art. The original could have made it A LOT better, but art isn’t really that bad, I mean the fact that they don’t have fingers is very odd indeed, but otherwise its very cute. I think its just damn adorable with little girls flying with trails of light behind them (which is somthing PGGZ should have at least tried).

As far as the personalities I really thing the small adaptations were wonderful except that Bloossm was boy-crazy. If any romance was added I think it should have been with the Rowdy Boys (Ooooooh)

dez, I will not consider your comment English untill you learn the language. I’m no anime-hater, in fact I love anime, but seriously, learn to spell. I haven’t even graduated middle school yet.

i like the character/pictures but the story was a bit weird and i wish the people who make this stories would changed into more interesting.

  44. stacey says:

Words alone are inadequate to describe the depths of my loathing for PPGZ. They have taken three fun, indestructable, awsome litte superhers and made them anoying. Has anyone heard Bubbles voice in the english dub. GRATING. And HIM has been turned in to a massive fag. It’s just so pointless, either make new episodes of PPG or gtfo.

  45. rachel says:

Him really looks more humanish. When I heard his voice i had nightmares.O.o And may i add that in the ppg z his dress is way too short! <3

  46. juliette says:

i like the power puff girls cause i want to be a power puff girls too.

  47. Izzati says:

the back row, last one, it is the Ameoba Boys, okay?

  48. Ellie says:

I don’t like it. If you’re going to re-make the PPG than at least make the basics correct. They aren’t even sisters are they? And not even the Professor’s daughters. And really? Not even Chemical X anymore? I was hoping that since they got into High School the series would be more High School instead of the Elementary it really is.

  49. Danielle says:

    I would probably watch this. But what kills me is the fact that they arent sisters! D;
