Study Says 75% Of Women Don't Know How To Use Gadgets

My fiance is going to kill me for publishing this, but she is one of the 75%. When she turns on the computer, I get nothing but questions. The Xbox 360 was an alien device to her until I showed her Zuma, and now I can’t get her off of it, but the truth remains, she just does not care enough about technology to learn it, and thus does not know how to use most of even what I consider simple gadgets.

From Gizmodo’s look at the Study:

The UK electronics retailer Comet performed a study on 1000 customers to justify their new “Gadget Angels” team—think Geek Squad in the Best Buys here. Their study concluded that 75% of women don’t really know what they’re doing when it comes to mobile gadgets.

The study says these women only know how to handle the basic functions of a phone, like making calls and using an address book. They also are confused by cameras and MP3 players, and 7/10 of them ask their partners or children to show them how to do stuff like download music to their devices.

Anyone else dealing with a technologically inept woman? Or are there any female readers that would like to stand up and show us that they are part of the 25%? There is nothing more attractive to a geeky guy then a girl that knows technology.

From experience, the 25% who do (understand tech and gadgets) seem to kick the @$$ off most of us guys!

    Extremes, eh?

  2. Lissy says:

that doesn’t sound right to me. Seriously, how hard is it to work an mp3 player???
I dunno, maybe older women like my mom. *shakes head* we’ve had the DVD player for like forever now and she still can’t figure out how to use it. After we’ve shown her several times…

  3. mpcc says:

Yeah, I have to agree with Lissy, most the girls I know don’t have huge problems with the basics. Sure they’re not into tech and gadgets but give them a cell phone or mp3 player and they’re fine.

Could be cultural too. I’m one of the 25% other extreme.. as a kid I wasn’t expected to want to know how they work and only told when I asked and bugged others.

  4. I’m happy to say that my girlfriend is one of the 25%. She has doubts, as any other person, but most of the time I just have to point her in the right direction and she figures out the rest.

  5. Synonymous says:

As a tech- and stat-savvy woman, I find this number somewhat implausible myself and would like to know more about how the study was conducted. What, for example, was the corresponding percentage of men who, according to this study, did not know how to use technology?

  6. Mana says:

I for one, KNOW im part of that 25%. I feel that it’s possible that this study WAS just a UK thing. Maybe that statistic is a little unrelated to the US. I mean, the women in the US are FAR more into technology that a lot of other women in other countries. I know for a fact that I dont have to depend on a man to fix my computer, TV, mobile phone, etc. I’m more than qualified to work these gadgets as well as others. ^^

  7. Melissa says:

I’m definitely not one of the 25%. Granted, I may not be as knowledgeable as some of my guy friends but I know more than most of my female ones.

  8. Marisa says:

I must agree with Synonymous…I am so tired of statistics without corresponding details about how the study was conducted.
I am also frustrated with this excerpt from the original article:

“men cared about what the specs and features are, whereas women just wanted to know why a device is useful and what it could do for them. Men spend hours going over instructions and women just bust in and use stuff.”

A man interested in specs may not understand a damn thing. Perhaps the women from the study didn’t waste time trying to feign competence in the need to gratify their ego.

  10. GM Tristan says:

Women are generally not interested in “boy toys”. We grew up with Transformers and GI Joes while they were busy playing with Barbies and play houses. But I agree, there *are* indeed tech-savvy women… and yeah, they do come once in a blue moon.

Thanks to companies like Apple, women are now open to operating ‘smart gadgets’ such as the iPod and the coming iPhone

  11. Panther says:

I am a woman and while I don’t claim to be an expert, and quite frankly don’t even CARE that much, I’m not helpless with technology. I can hook up TVs, stereos and DVD players, use every mobile phone I get AND teach my boyfriend how to use his, play video games, operate and often fix my own computer without much help. When there is something I’ve never encountered before, it doesn’t take long for me to figure out what’s going on… and *gasp!* I’m black too. If the vast majority of women are supposed to be tech morons, I wonder what other findings they can come up with that don’t apply to me…
