Same here. Got OEM licenses but for older (non-SP2) versions of XP. It's a drag having to download that large update whenever you have to re-format/re-install.

At any rate, locking down things would only make life more difficult for the legitimate users or for the end-users who (perhaps unknowingly) use bootlegged versions. But as for the big-time piracy gangs, they'd be able to crack protection in minutes (they're experts at that, after all) and continue selling their warez as if nothing happened.

Who loses? The end-users lose.

I honestly don't think Microsoft would have the guts to nuke it's users' PCs. Specially now that Apple is threatening and eating their market share (although slowly).

It's not the users fault they aren't selling as many Licenses as they used to, it's their own fault that the OS has been out for so long. I own 2 Windows Licenses, and I use neither of them, even though I use Windows, so I don't really think I'm stealing anything from them, I just prefer to use a more default-updated build of their OS instead of wasting an afternoon on Windows Update every time I format.
