Top 10 Open Source Programs

While this would not really be my top ten list of open source programs, I think that the list that The Blog Joint has created has some merit, and a few of these could use more exposure.

In their top 10 list they have:
eMule
Audacity
Creative Commons
Ogg
PHP
Wiki
Azureus
Open Office
Linux
Firefox

No doubt some of you have your own thoughts on what should be in that list, and I would love to hear about them, as I am always looking for more great open source software. Is there anything better than Audacity for editing podcasts?

Many of them could, yes. PHP, however, has already gotten far more exposure than it EVER deserved. :)

  2. David says:

Yeah, Ruby on Rails is the “big” thing now. :) But you can’t fault them for listing it due to its long term popularity.

I’m not big on Ruby, myself. Python is my thing. but both Ruby and Python (and any other dynamic language, for that matter), are a lot better than PHP! :)

  4. Jason Drohn says:

You have to throw mySQL and apache in there as well, being that 60% of the servers on the internet use it.

Check out http://www.eff.org. They have some cool stuff, anonymous/privacy intenet software, etc.

7zip (compression), gimp (graphics), and media player classic (audio/video player) are all excellent open source programs. i haven’t tried abiword (word processing) yet, is open office better? the thing i like best about all four of these is that they offer support for non-open source formats.

audacity works very well for me, except for 32-bit wave files. for some reason trying to edit them slows my computer to a stop. still great for removing pops and clicks from the start or end of mp3′s.

i’m looking at open office now. looks interesting, thanks for the post.
