Happy birthday to our clay-faced friend.

When I was a kid, I used to enjoy watching Gumby on television. All those crazy antics–usually with underlying lessons–were both entertaining and interesting. There was something about the crudeness and simplicity of the work that’s worth appreciating. Stop-motion animation, after all, has some magic to it, unlike most of today’s animated work–that’s not a computer-generated image you’re watching. It’s the real deal!
Little did I know that Gumby was way older than I was. He’s now turning 50 (about twice my age today).
Gumby, the little green clay boy, is celebrating 50 years in show business â in 1956 he made his first appearance on television, on âThe Howdy Doody Showâ â and heâs looking as young as ever. Thereâs not a wrinkle on him, and if there were, you could smooth it out with your thumb.
I think Gumby’s birthday message to us would be this: Don’t be a blockhead!

You’re the man, Gumby.
You’re the man.
