Released this Tuesday for the very first time in America, the original, uncut version of Godzilla: King of the Monsters (simply called “Gojira” in Japan) from 1954. While most of the more enthusiastic Godzilla fans have managed to see this version of the movie by some means or another, this is the first time the movie has ever been officially released in America for the general movie-watching audience.

The original Godzilla is a masterpiece of dark and frightening imagery mixed with social commentary and historical value. The 2-disk DVD has plenty of extras, including trailers, extensive featurettes covering various aspects of the film’s creation, lots of rare production photographs and even the Original US version starring Raymond Burr.

When most people hear the name “Godzilla” they instantly think of the cheesy films like “Godzilla vs. Megalon” or “Godzilla vs. Gigan”, blissfully unaware that, at one point in time, Godzilla meant a whole lot more than some goofy mascot used to sell action figures. The original Godzilla produced in 1954 isn’t some schlocky B-movie. Quite the contrary, it’s a dark and frightening look at the horrible consequences of nuclear weapons and a magnificent commentary on the fears of Japanese citizens post-World War II.
