iPod Update Unknown Error 1417 on iTunes7 fix

One of the things that bothered me about iTunes7, is that even though it has a great interface for managing the iPod, I couldn’t get it to update my first gen iPod Nano to the 1.2 firmware due to an unknown error in 1417. But now, thanks to the admin of Chernick.org I now can.

Here are the steps you have to follow:

1)Plug in your iPod and wait for iTunes to tell you an update for it is available
2)Click the Install button on that dialog and keep an eye on your iPod
3)When your iPod screen switches from the flashing “Do Not Disconnect” message to the Main Menu screen, unplug the iPod, wait a couple SECONDS, plug the iPod back in
4)You should notice some slow-down in the progress meter and a new dialog box should come up and tell you your iPod is being updated and to not disconnect it until the update finishes
5)That’s it. Wait for the update to finish and iTunes will re-recognize it and show its new up-to-date status.

So, as you can see, Apple’s software features software bugs just like any other. The difference is that they don’t have to waste time fixing vulnerabilities as much as those that develop software for Windows, and so they can focus on bringing more features and making everything more visually appealing.

But I’m certain that somewhere in Microsoft’s main building, some chair throwing CEO is happy about the bits of negative attention iTunes 7 is getting right now.

When I run iTunes then fire up FFXI (a game), for example, iTunes gets all skippy and doesn’t play music right… this really sucks because I like iTunes 7. =/ Going to have to downgrade to 6 though because this isn’t going to work.

  11. Spot on! Thanks a lot!!!
It reminds me of a prob i had with my sony minidisc back in the day. It appeared their software had problems putting anything large (over 250k) on the minidisc, and the only way to do it was to put on a small file so it opened some form of connection and the pile in with the songs :D

  12. Little Cupcakes says:

    Worked for me too!!

  16. Just a thought says:

Anyone any good at editing videos? I think a changed “PC vs. MAC” commercial would be funny, where the MAC guy just says: “I don’t know…. 1417?” as a reply to anything asked :o)

  35. Jessie says:

This was a great save. My music wouldn’t update to my ipod after I upgraded Itunes. This fix is much appreciated!

  36. MSFT says:

iTunes 7 SUCKS, Apple idiots!!! what thay think!!! Fix it now

  37. YP says:

    Hey Dude,
My problem was strange: all songs on my 60GB (I had some 4000 songs) got wiped out when i connected it yesterday morning to update it. And then I got a balloon on my taskbar which said “ipod.exe in ipod_control had got corrupted and I needed to chkdsk”.

So I thought my itunes software was corrupted and downloaded itunes 7 (i was using itunes 6 until then). Still it refused to update and gave me the 1417 error. Trying to restore gave a 1428 or 1418 error.

So I deleted the ipod_control folder in the ipod through My Computer and copied all the freakin music back and it worked just that once and updated the ipod.

But it didn’t update the next time and came back with error 1417. Which is when I stumbled upon your solution and man, did it work !!!!!!! You’re awesome dude!!!!!

Incidentally, I use my 60GB to store all my music files as well instead of storing them on my laptop as the laptop hard disk is only 40 GB and with 25 GB of music, can really slow down.

Know it is a bit of a risk so have a backup of all the music files on the office desktop!!!!! Sheesh, the things one has to do.

    Anyways, can’t thank you enough!!!!!!

  38. Isla Forster says:

Thank you Thank you Thank you! I’ve been trying to fix that for about two weeks and couldnt find a solution anywhere – worked first time – thank you

  39. badtzmaru says:

    Thank you so much!!

  40. Vetty says:

    You’re a pro!

  41. Stacey says:

I am so glad I stumbled on your site… who would have thought something as simple as unplugging the ipod and plugging it back in would work! I was getting extremely frustrated with iTunes when it kept telling me to update my nano software but then gave me “unknown error 1417.” THANK YOU for providing such a simple solution!

  42. Nilanjan says:

Thanks a lot. It worked but sad to see Apple bug though

  43. Marc says:

Thank you. It seems iTunes 7 was very rushed, a small price to pay, anyways for great, but buggy software.

  44. jessica says:

I did what you asked me to do about unpluging the ipod when the message of an update shows up…i plug it back in and i did not get an update dialog..the only thing i saw was the restoring ipod meter…going back and forth…and the ipod does say do not disconnect… the ipod works and from previous of tries it erase all my songs.. So i do not know what to do. when i open itunes it says that the ipod is corrupted… and than i follow your instructions…i get the unknown error 1415. Thanxs

  45. namccart says:

I have a 4g 40 gig ipod. When sickness overtook it, and I desperately needed a restore, I encountered error 1428 with every attempt. Your method worked for me, too! Thanks.

  47. TJM says:

  48. Lauren says:

I kept getting error 1415 and -50. Your solution worked perfectly. Thank you so much!!!!!

  49. Matt says:

You’re awesome – that worked. Thanks.

  50. D@N says:

I FRICKEN LOVE YOU! absolute champion.

    I was so pissed because:

    a) apple released software that *stuffed* my ipod
    b) couldnt use the device i spent lots of hard earned money on
    c) no obvious fix on the apple site and therefore had to spend hours to find your awesome post.

Frustrating as they may be I can accept software bugs will occur, but not acknowledging them is outrageous. Had they put a link on the main page to make this obvious they could have saved countless customers lots of time

  57. Theo says:

You, my friend are a champion and should be worshiped as a god.

  58. Pramod Gopan says:

A smarter way to do it is just to Disable AutoPlay.

I went into My Computer, Right clicked on the iPod icon, clicked properties, selected the Autoplay tab, and for each content type, I clicked select action to take, then chose the take no action.

After I did this, I reset my iPod by holding the menu and center button down & then reconnected my iPod & did the Update process & it finally worked.

Hope the fix is not too late;):)

    Thanks & Regards,
    Pramod Gopan

  63. Limey says:

Thanks, this worked 1st time. 5th gen 60GB

  64. Damian says:

The man’s a genius. Thank you very much

  65. Eric says:

Had the same error with a first gen 4G nano. Found the problem with mine was 1) not software, 2) not operating system and 3) not iTunes related. It was the cable.

Tried XP – two machines, OSX -Mac Mini, Powerbook. While the XP machines would recognize the nano, you couldn’t do anything with it.

So, on a whim I grabbed a different cable from a “newer” first gen nano and plugged the older nano in. Restore worked like a charm this time.

Bottom line – you may want to try another cable!

  66. Ellzoo says:

hey thank god someone knows what to do with these updates :D

  67. zerodann says:

    Brilliant! Worked on 2 1GB shuffles & a 4GB nano.

  100. k says:

i had ipod 1.3 error 1417. tried the fix list above, and maybe my years of college made me studip, but it did not work for me. updating to 7.0.2 (from 7.0.0) version of itunes, however, did work. just and fyi….
    ken

  101. Bas Fluijt says:

I too got had the problem with the 1418 Message from Itunes 7.0.1 and 7.0.2. I got a Nano v.1.3 4 Gig and it just froze when I was uploading files from Itunes to the device. Resulting into a soft reset from the Nano. After booting up Windows came op with a corrupted itunes.exe message. Even Itunes gave me the well known ‘you kneed to restore your ipod’ message.

Because I had this problem before with Itunes 7.0.1 I grabbed a program that is called HP flash disk formatting tool (seems to be all over the net ). This tool erases all content from your Ipod and by doing that, it go’s into restore-mode. The fact that all info will be lost after using this HP tool doesn’t really matter because Itunes destroyed the content anyway. After formatting the device and disconnecting it, Itunes seems to see the device as a recoverable Ipod when you reconnect it again. It’s even giving the message that the Ipod is in recover-mode.

After clicking on the recover Button Itunes wants to download the recovery software ( containing the latest software version for your Ipod). When it is done doing this it will attempt to upload the software to your Ipod. This is the point where it gives you the 1418 message after seeing the progress-bar stop half way or even after two blocks.

Serveral sources tell you to disconnect the Ipod and reconnect it at this point. I had no succes with that trick. What did work with me was using a different USB port / Firewire Port and formatting the Nano every time before going into a new recovery attempt. You might want to try every USB / Firewire slot several times just to make sure. I found that the Ipod only let me recover the device on two of the 6 ports.

It’s a pain in the back having to go through all this hassle. But I have been succesfull for two times in one year. It took me two hours to figure this out. I tolld this tip to some other 1418 related forums and allot of people seem succesfull.

Apple is losing customers with this bad piece of programming. I wish every the best of luck with this recovery method since it saved me from sending my Ipod to Apple.

    Bas

  102. Chris says:

Thank you very much! It’s really amazing… it seems that the update doesn’t work normally on most of the iPods (4G, 5G, nano and so on), but your solution helps to get out of it in almost every case! Your solution saved me from doing it the hard way described by Bas (which I already did for another update, but this destroys really everything before reinstalling the firmware).

  103. eeee says:

    Genius! Thanks much!

  104. ToshibaOwner says:

The solution may be very simple. Go to your computer manufacturers website and look for an updates section or just search BIOS. Download the latest BIOS for your model and you should be all set. Sometimes you need to download th BIOS so that different parts of you computer can continue to “talk” to each other.

  105. Gail says:

HOORAY! It worked :D Thank you so much!

  106. TANO says:

I have tried many times but it does not work on mine. I have the new ipod nano bought in Nov 06 and upgrading from i tunes 7.0.2. does anyone knows what to do?

  107. James says:

I had the same problem cannot update ipod error – 50
I had itunes 7.0.2 and I downgraded to 7. This fixed the problem for me, I had also tried restoring and everything else. I think the software was the problem for me. I have windows xp 64bit with an amd dual core processor.

  108. Mrinal says:

    Thank you!!!
How on earth did you figure this out?

This is a brilliant fix. I went from terror struck father (Christmas present for my daughter that did not work) to hero in minutes. Well done

  120. Dan says:

For 1st Gen Shuffle owners: If you have more than one ipod, make sure only your shuffle is plugged in, then the update will install just fine. If you have multiple ipods plugged at the same time, iTunes gets confused and you’ll see the 1417 error. :-)

  121. Mike says:

OMG It worked its amazing thank you so much!!!!!!

  122. Tom1981 says:

    Hi there.

I’ve got a brand new 1G 2nd generation iPod shuffle – largely due to the fact that my 1st Gen 512mb model became blocked and wouldn’t update – There was an error code 1418 when I tried to restore and the same happened with my brand new model.

I tried to restore the new iPod to factory settings and received the usual 1418 message, but then tried it again, this time removing my shuffle -(without safe disconnection)mid restore and plugged it back in quite by accident. Voila! iPod restored.

Next, I opted for the iPod to automatically fill from the iTunes library and it’s now working fine, (touch wood).

Hope this works for any other shuffle users experiencing a similar problem!

  123. Johnny says:

Your system doesnt work for me, mine never switches from the ‘Do not disconnect’ screen, i tried it with that screen up, same box came up, same error.

This is the first apple product i have bought, after hearing so many good things about apple and how they don’t have bugs etc, and this is what i’m greeted with 15 minutes after booting up the iPod… not. a. happy. man.

  124. Abby says:

I spent my entire weekend on this problem! I don’t know if it was something I did yesterday or if it was just the magic voodoo of visiting your site, but the little fucker is actually working! Thanks!

  125. martinlandivar says:

I am using mi Ipod as a hard drive & managing my music manually…. does anyone know if this solution will work for me?

  126. martinlandivar says:

  127. Scott says:

Hmm I seem to be the only person that this fix is not working for… My nano gets error 1417 when I try to update software.. I followed fix and when the screen went to main menu I unplugged nano, however as soon as I unplug it I get the error 1417 message. If I plug it back in I just get the message saying that an update is available again.. Any ideas? Thx..

  128. willn2 says:

this does not work for me, i have the i-pod shuffle and i get the error 1417 and then another one sayin -50 unable to write to this disk of summit

Worked the first time no problem! You guys freakin’ rock!!!!!

  130. ThePoopsmith says:

I read on another post to simply restart your ipod using the menu + select key. After it restarts then try it out. It worked for me when the above trick failed. Then again, no one thing fixes all things

  131. Nath says:

    it works, Thanks man !!!!!!

  134. Jeff says:

Spent at least 24 hours trying to fix issue of ipod not being recognized and being called “corrupted” by the itunes 7 software. Did the 5 R’s repeatedly and reformatted the ipod multiple times.

Finally saw a blurb about disconnecting all other USB devices except for mouse and keyboard, then connecting ipod. Worked like a charm! Hope that helps you get some sleep!

  135. CairaC says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! This actually worked!!!! … you rock man!!!

  136. VBOnLine says:

Works like a charme, thx !!

  137. JoeR says:

doesn’t work, first upgrade to the ipod software and it fails, junk!

  138. JoeR says:

The reason why your ipod will not update is because you have another media player installed on your computer. Make itunes your default player for audio files and you will be able to update your ipod. I just did it after several attempts at Apples web site.
    Cheers!

I never got step 3 to work since it never switched to Main Menu, it just stayed with the Do Not Disconnect message. I ignored the message and unplugged, plugged in, unplugged, unplugged about 5 times and kept trying to install inbetween unplugs and it finally took hold. Reminded me of installing software on the old MS Windows 3.1 (delete it, try it, delete it, reboot it, kick it, etc). After this worked I switched the default media player to iTunes. So now I have iTunes, Windows Media Player, Musicmatch, Real Player, probably others. I’ll stick with iTunes for now. Thanks for the help!

My ipod erased all my music while being charged!!!

An attempt to sync my music failed, and I tried numerous times to restore it with no success. I was left with an Ipod that would not even turn on and appeared to be dead.

I decided to try your suggestion even though my ipod displayed either error (6) or error (9).

I was not given the option of an update though Itunes while restoring. However, I allowed the restore process to extract my ipod software, restore software, verify software, and while it was affirming my ipod software i disconnected it for a couple of seconds, then re-connected it. To my surprise it worked!

    Many, many thanks

  145. ipod repair says:

The ipod hard drive is responsible for many errors, but in many instances, the problem is not actually with the hard drive, but with the hard drive cable. Corrosion develops on the silver part of the hard drive cable and must be cleaned periodically to keep the iPod functioning correctly. This isn’t always the case, but many times it is.
