Leander Kahney has a first impressions article about the Mac Pro over at Wired, and he wonders whether it was overkill.

I just took delivery of my new Mac Pro, which is a workstation — not a computer — that’s designed for serious film editing or Photoshop gymnastics.

I’ll use it mostly for e-mail and photos of my kids, and I’m wondering if I’ve overindulged my needs.

Of course, it’s overkill! Who needs a $3,000 (after upgrades) machine running two dual-core 2.6-GHz Xeon processors and loaded with 3 GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive for kid pics? Okay, having large storage and a ton of RAM would probably be reasonable enough, but a Mac Pro? I mean, I love my kids, but I probably won’t spend this much for personal use. (That’s unless Apple will send me a unit for review. Hint! Hint!)

But what’s “needs” got to do with it? I’ve wanted this machine for a long time. I’ve been waiting for the Intel upgrade since Steve Jobs said it was coming about a year ago.

Oh, I forget. MacHeads would probably want–or need?–to have a Mac Pro. I’m turning into one myself, but I doubt I’ll be able to get myself a Mac Pro, even though my desktop is in serious need of an upgrade/replacement.
