Speedtest.net is now live (out of beta) and offers simple, one-click connection speed testing. The site even gives bloggers and forum posters easy links to images of the speed test results generated. For example, here’s from a test I just did a while ago.

Not really fast, eh? But I get by with 512 Kbps (or almost–my test says it’s only about 477 Kbps but my DSL package is supposed to be the 512K one). And my ISP tells me they burst the speed up to 1 Mbps at nighttime (when I do most of my surfing anyway). Something must be wrong with the upload part of the test, though, since upload speeds are supposedly slower than download speeds (usually by 50%).
Speedtest.net is a general use broadband connection testing site with many geographically dispersed servers to test against. Here we plan to demonstrate and beta test our latest Ookla Speed Test creations such as latency, jitter, client location and distance to server calculations. Test your connection anytime and even store your results for future reference. If you have ideas on how we can make Speedtest.net more useful then please contact us!
Maybe this should be the speed test post. I’d be interested to know how fast other people’s connections are. If you do the test, please post your results on the comment thread.

Ahh, I like this connection:

Greetings from switzerland
We home-office types envy you guys with the infrastructure! I guess that’s one thing I miss working in the corporate world: the amazingly fast Broadband!
Bah… you guys think you have bad connections… I’m paying for a 4 Megabit line ADSL and the speed I actually have is the equivalent of a 2 Megabit one, at most.
You want bad connection?
For $40AUD ($30USD) I get:
- 512kb/s download
- 128kb/s upload
- 300ms ping time
Or, if I’ve gone over the stupid 300mb download limit:
- 28kb/s download and upload…
Talk about paying through the nose for crap!
