If you had not heard, Eudora is going open source and it will be using Mozilla’s Thunderbird code when it is re-released.
Wired has all the details on Eudora going open source, and it looks like it could be a great move for the software, as the company continues to pursue its goals elsewhere.
Development on the “classic” versions of Eudora, both paid and ad-supported, has stopped. The builds that were posted yesterday, October 11, are the last versions of the old Eudora that will ever be distributed.
The new, open source version of Eudora will not use any of the code from the current versions. The current code is platform specific (two separate codebases exist for the Mac and Windows clients), while the new, Thunderbird-based code will be cross-platform. Also, the current codebase has licensed code in it that can’t be redistributed under an open source license.
Looks like it will be a better fit, but I will be interested to see which project gets more attention, Eudora or Thunderbird?
