I just got an email from Jotspot (I have an account with them, which I actively used before). They have just announced they have recently been acquired by Google. No details are out yet on how much and in what form the acquisition would be. But here’s what founder Joe Kraus had to say.
As we built the business over the past three years Google consistently attracted our attention. We watched them acquire Writely, and launch Google Groups, Google Spreadsheets and Google Apps for Your Domain. It was pretty apparent that Google shared our vision for how groups of people can create, manage and share information online. Then when we had conversations with people at Google we found ourselves completing each other’s sentences. Joining Google allows us to plug into the resources that only a company of Google’s scale can offer, like a huge audience, access to world-class data centers and a team of incredibly smart people.
It seems Google isn’t content with Writely, the collaborative word-processor app it acquired a few months ago and has since integrated into its Google Documents suite. Jotspot seems to be more powerful, as it does not only support text, but also other types of documents.
While other wikis only support plain old text, JotSpot’s wiki allows you to create rich web-based spreadsheets, calendars, documents and photo galleries. It’s as easy as using a word processor â you don’t need to know HTML. Thousands of businesses are using JotSpot to manage projects, build an intranet, share files and stay in sync with colleagues and customers.
Does this mean Google is gearing up for a full online office/productivity suite?
