Halloween always gets me nostalgic for the scary things I loved as a kid. Having grown up in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I was priviledged to one of the finest eras of anthology horror television. Tales from the Crypt, Monsters, The New Twilight Zone, Are You Afraid of the Dark and, yes, Tales from the Darkside.

While prowling around You Tube I managed to come across my all-time favorite episode of the series, “Inside the Closet”.

Directed by Tom Savini (Friday the 13th, Creepshow, Dawn of the Dead), “Inside the Closet” tells the story of a college student renting a room in the home of a creepy old man. At night, the girl is plagued my a strange monster living inside her closet and underneath her bed.

Most people recognize Tom Savini’s work for the outstanding puppetry and gore effects, however, “Inside the Closet” takes a more low-key approach, as it relies heavily on atmosphere and darkness to convey the frightening tone. Fantastic episode with a great twist ending to boot.

Any of you who remember Tales from the Darkside should enjoy this.

UPDATE: Tales from the Darkside will be returning to the Sci-Fi Channel on October 9th at 8pm.
