Sony has finally released the most anticipated PSP firmware update after their 2.0 version. This firmware update allows compatibility with the Playstation 1 titles which will be available for purchase via the Playstation 3′s online store (yes, it’s a bit unfair that you’re “forced” to get a Playstation 3 if you want to play PS1 games on your PSP), but also adds some new functionalities as the list enumerates:
- PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
- [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
- A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music].
- 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
- [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
- [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].
Besides the Playstation 1 emulated games compatibility, this firmware update also allows you to use the PSP as a controller for the Playstation 3 (as long as the game supports it, of course). But more importantly, it finally allows you to boot your PSP with a UMD in it, without it automatically loading it!
Looks like something is finally going right for Sony, for once. Oh, and I almost forgot:
If you update your PSP to this version of the firmware you will lose the ability to run unsigned code (homebrew programs) on it. And no, there is no way for you to downgrade your PSP after you do this.

Sony is shooting itself in the foot with the PS3 requirement for PS1 games. Especially considering the lack of PS3s on supply and their insane price. Hopefully they will see this and change their mind. Otherwise I’m already one person that they have lost as a customer, as a student I am *not* buying a PS3 (Unless I want to starve for the next year), but I would like to buy PS1 games (in particular Metal Gear Solid). Aside from that, this update is the best thing ever for the PSP, I still can’t see many benefeits of homebrew, everything released as such still seems pretty amateurish, so I’m not fussed by loosing out on that, and the camera addition is quality. As a non digi-camera owner I’ll definately be buying one if the quality is good and they price it right.
im the second person on this forum yay me
number three, sweet
…? You’re also the biggest spanners.
This is gone be the best upgrade espically with the camera coming out. and you also can play ps1 games which is tight. But is the upgrade on a game or something????????
