It seems that Sony still has some time to innovate after all, after spending buckets of dollars on the Playstation 3. This is a FELICA card, which according to the author of the article is a “Japanese electronic purse”, I guess that means that it’s a credit card.

It’s nice to see a more ecologic form of plastic finally appearing on the markets. Who knows, maybe a few years from now we’ll have eatable vegetal-based credit cards, and when some thug tries to steal it you can just eat it. Well, I guess that won’t spare your life though… on second thought, bad idea!

Call me a skeptic, but this looks more like a PR stunt than actual concern for the environment. I mean, how often do people throw away these little credit cards? Every year? Every five years? I guess even a little bit is better than none, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the envelope and the papers that come with the cards aren’t made of recycled paper. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the manufacturing process to make these PR friendly cards are even more harmful to the environment than making those “bad” cards.
To be even more skeptical, I’m pretty sure that the the environmental benefits of these veggie cards don’t even offset the landfills filled by exploded/recalled SONY batteries (and PCs with rootkits). Yup, a cheapshot, but I lost all faith in SONY.
