Zelda takes notes from Shadow of the Colossus

I was recently lucky enough to acquire a copy of Zelda for my newly bought Nintendo Wii, which was recently reviewed here not to long ago. The very first thing that hit me when I watched the introduction movie, was how similar it seemed to Shadow of the Colossus, for the Playstation 2.

For starters, the introduction movie kicks off with an eagle soaring over the skies. When you first start playing the game, one of the very first “items” you will use is an eagle, which approaches Link in the same manner. But back to the intro movie, when you start off on “Colossus”, you see the hero traveling through a very realistic and detailed world and at the end, he crosses a huge bridge.

On Zelda, before the the game starts, you see link in front of a stone entrance, similar, yet not as detailed as the one in “Colossus”, and then he crosses a bridge striding on his horse.

Afterwards, you see Link also crossing the detailed world, through ridges and lush plains, in a very similar way to “Colossus”. And as you play the game, and more specifically when you reach the first plains, or “traveling sections” as you may interpret, you will definitely feel some influences from “Colossus”, from the tone of the colors to the map itself.

I’m not saying that Zelda is a direct copy of “Colossus”, but I’m very happy to see that the game, despite not being as popular as it could have been, was definitely an influence to some game developers and designers. If you play both games, and think about my words, you’ll certainly notice the similarities.

First, on Shadow of the Colossus. It was definitely one of the best games last year and certainly won my personal Game Of The Year award. And as far as Twilight Princess goes, personally I’ve played it about an hour (I lack the Wii) but my friend has beaten it recently and he’s debating if it’s better than Ocarina of Time. I want a Wii so bad…
