It seems that Apple has released a patent very recently to put their laptop’s optical drive underneath the laptop. Personally, I find it a horrible idea. If such a thing was released in the future, and we compared both old and new models, I think that people would definitely agree that the current one’s solution is much more appealing.

The only thing positive out of this measure is that it might decrease the thickness of the laptop a bit. But I a bit more thickness to flipping my laptop every time I want to change a CD/DVD.

1how about tablet-notebooks? simply lift the screen and insert CD/DVD. so there are no top-down-questions. … only an idea! ;)

2It makes sense to me. I can’t remember the last time I used the CD/DVD drive on my laptop… it’s probably back when I installed Windows, Linux, and few core apps like Office and Photoshop. All the smaller apps and media were either downloaded or transferred via LAN. I can see optical drives becoming obsolete in the near future as HD sizes in laptops continue to grow, more people get access to broadband, and LAN (especially wireless) get more common. Besides, if I was Steve, I wouldn’t want people to buy CDs and DVDs in the first place and get them from iTunes instead.

4if they go ahead with this then people will have an even better reason not to buy apple stuff. (other than the fact that its made by apple of course)

6A goofy idea that will possibly never be implemented… ever.
