I managed to reinstall XP over Vista by completely removing Vista. Vista prevents you from copying files from your XP disc (or so I figured), so I ran Linux over that, then ran my XP install and it worked fine.

I can also reinstall Vista over my new XP install. It's just a lotta work.

This seems fine (as much as I dislike MS), I read it as if you take an XP license and use the Vista upgrade license, you can no longer run Vista, AND that original XP again together.

That is why you bought the "upgrade", if this doesnt' work for you, buy a new install license.
