Fujitsu-Siemens offers laptops with linux preinstaled (For sure in Poland and Germany, I am not quite sure if also in UK). And these cost less then same models with Windows (at least in Poland).
They are based on intel chips so drivers and support is readily avalilaible.

And as far as Grandma@linux is concerned it all depends on applications used. And lets face it: Most will use only WEB/movies/e-mail/voip and for that purpose Linux can be set up once by You and won't require any special support.

What's more - You can install vncserver and vncviewer to provide remote support.

You're actually going to tell grandma to go find help at a message board? Yeah. That'll work.

@Tom:

Not a problem!

You can replace the OS that comes on your laptop with Linux once you buy it, or have both installed at the same time.

If you want to keep the OS your laptop comes with, use your Linux install disk to create another partition for Linux. This way you will be able to choose which OS to boot on startup.

You can also resize the partition the original OS is installed on to make room for Linux, or delete the original OS altogether.

A couple days ago I resized a Windows XP partition make room for Linux on a Sony Vaio. It's actually pretty easy to do.

I've been using Linux for only about a month and I'll never go back to Windows as my main OS.
