The new movie has reversed this process. CG allows for some MAJOR cheating, but the toys are still bound by the laws of physics. I think they wanted the truck part to look the best, and let the robot part look as good as they could with the constraints of the truck parts. I'm actually looking forward to the movie. Then again, I'm not one of those whining about Megatron not turning into a pistol for another Decepticon to use (major shrinkage in mass just isn't plausible, purists!).
