One of the things that surprised everyone in a good, and bad, way, was the name of Nintendo’s current console. Some liked it, some didn’t, but one thing that we can all agree upon, is that it was surprising. In a recent interview, the father of Super Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, explained the reasoning behind the choice of the console’s name.
Japanese people have a funny habit of abbreviating names. For instance if you have a “Family Computer,” people call it “Famicom”. We at Nintendo had thought of giving it a name that can not be abbreviated. It is a very short official name, and we wanted to add other words to create a new additional name. Such as “Wii Sports” “Wii Play” and so on. We debated how the Wii might be thought of in the English speaking countries. And we came to a conclusion that there is no other choice but to use this short, appealing name.
What do you think? If Nintendo had sticked with Revolution the Japanese could have probably reduced it to Rev or something similar to that. If we consider that, then I think that Wii sounds much better, or at least more appealing to gamers and non-gamers alike,

1Um. No.
The Wii name is still odd and I would prefer the Rev. Wii is not AS bad as the first impression but it is still not a favorite of mine.

2yeah… now that i have gotten use to the Wii as the name, its not so bad, but the Revolution or “Rev” isnt so bad. Who cares if they wanna abbreviate it, its no big deal.
