Over on Nomadishere there is a list that Justin Walton put up about geeks, and working happy. His list is for the most part very true, as I have come across some of these problems/issues at my previous work places. I wish they had this list in hand when they hired me.

The items are as follows, check out the original post if you want more details:

  • Let them work when they want
  • Let them work where they want
  • Let them control their lighting
  • Let them wear headphones
  • Do not expect them to wear a suit
  • Do not make them participate in company events (unless you are sure it is geek-friendly)
  • Do not hold a lot of arbitrary meetings that could have otherwise been handled through email or IM
  • Do not make them do anything other than work

Is there anything else that needs to be added to that list? Do you have a great story about one of these rules? Please let me know.
