This summer is going to be a HUGE movie season. There are tons and tons of geek-related flicks coming out this year…in fact, it might be hard to keep track of them all…but don’t worry, Forever Geek has got you covered with Forever Geek’s Summer Movie Round-up.
Spider-Man 3
Release Date: May 4th, 2007
My Take: Spider-Man 3, to many, is the most anticipated film of the summer. The media machine is already hyping this movie by releasing footage during the television show Heroes, and through multiple trailers. By the time the film is released Spider-Man will, again, be on everything from Oreo Cookies to tire gauges….and we’ll love every minute of it!
Plot: Our beloved hero Peter Parker has finally managed to maintain a balance to his duties to Mary-Jane and his life as the crime-fighter Spider-Man. But trouble is on it’s way. A strange black substance soaks into Peter’s suit, giving it a black appearance and amplifies his powers to his advantage against his powerful new foe, Sandman. But it also enhances the darker qualities of Peter’s personality deep within himself that he begins to lose himself to. Peter must fight his dark temptations and remember the lovable hero he use to be if he is to ever conquer the darkness within and face not only Sandman and his old, vengeful friend Harry Osbourne, but also himself. Shrek The Third
Release Date: May 18th, 2007
My Take: This third adventure in the fairytale world of Shrek is a must see for any animation geek.
Plot: When his new father-in-law, King Harold (John Cleese) falls ill, Shrek (Mike Myers) is looked at as the heir to the land of Far, Far Away. Not one to give up his beloved swamp, Shrek recruits his friends Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to install the rebellious Artie (Justin Timberlake) as the new king. Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), however, rallies a band of royal girlfriends to fends off a coup d’etat by the jilted Prince Charming (Rupert Everett). (imdb)

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Release Date: May 27th, 2007
My Take: I was disappointed with the second installment of the Pirates franchise…I felt it was too long, and often times dull. I haven’t seen much from this third chapter yet, but so far, my excitement is limited.
Plot: Captain Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann must sail off the edge of the map, navigate treachery and betrayal, and make their final alliances for one last decisive battle. (imdb)

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Release Date: June 15th, 2007
My Take: This sequel looks like a vast improvement over the original film (based solely on the trailers, of course), and is probably my most anticipated summer release. Some of the films on this list are almost guaranteed to satisfy, but this one is up in the air. So far it looks like it has a real chance. June 15th can’t get here fast enough…
Plot: The Fantastic Four learn that they aren’t the only super-powered beings in the universe when they square off against the powerful Silver Surfer and the planet-eating Galactus. (imdb ) Note: It is still unclear if or how Galactus will appear in the film.

Transformers
Release Date: July 4th, 2007
My Take: Of all the geek-related films coming out this summer, this is the one that I think strays the furthest from its source material, and is the one I’m probably looking forward to the least. While casting classic Optimus voice actor Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime is a good move to appease apprehensive fans, the designs of the robots, in my opinion, leave a great deal to be desired, and I remain leery of this Michael Bay helmed action flick…
Plot: Dueling alien races, the Autobots and the Decepticons, bring their battle to Earth, leaving the future of humankind hanging in the balance. (imdb)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix
Release Date: July 13th, 2007
My Take: This is one franchise that continues to deliver amazing films, and The Order of the Pheonix appears to be no exception. The only real concern I can see is that as these books progress, they continue to get much longer, and the creators of these films will have to cut more and more to adapt them to the big screen….hopefully this one won’t feel too rushed to get all the story into the limited time frame we have in the theater…
Plot: Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts for one of his most difficult years yet. Not only must he study for his OWL exams, but as the Ministry of Magic is gradually taking control of Hogwarts and spares no efforts trying to discredit him, he tries to tell the skeptical wizarding world the truth of Voldemort’s return… (imdb)

The Simpsons Movie
Release: July 27th, 2007
My Take: Can this movie possibly live up to almost 20 years of hype? Probably not…but we can dream, can’t we? The Simpsons finally make it to the big screen this summer, and I’ll be there on opening day with the highest of hopes, but the lowest of expectations.
Plot: Unknown

Underdog
Release: August 3rd, 2007
My Take: I don’t want to like or care about this movie…but that first trailer is kinda funny. I just might have to check it out.
Plot: A lab accident gives a hound named Shoeshine some serious superpowers — a secret that the dog eventually shares with the young boy who becomes his owner and friend. (imdb )

Stardust
Release: August 10th, 2007
My Take: Based on a novel by Neil Gaiman…and he’s supporting the movie…that’s enough for me right there. This epic fantasy film features a huge cast including Claire Danes, Robert DeNiro, Ian McKellen, Peter O’Toole and more…I have yet to see even a trailer for this one, but I’m eager for them to get the marketing machine up and running.
Plot: In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he’ll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm. (imdb)

Fanboys
Release: August 17th, 2007
My Take: I remember reading about this screenplay before Episode One was even released on Aint-It-Cool-News. It’s one of those films that I thought would never get made, but it seems to have finally happened. I’ll be there opening day to check it out…if for no other reason than to support the guys who have spent the last 10 years (or more) trying to bring it to the big screen.
Plot: Four guys from the Midwest drive across the country to honor the wish of their dying friend: to watch “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch before the movie’s worldwide release. (imdb)

3Oh, and how about 28 Weeks Later.

4We love TMNT, but it’s not technically a SUMMER release, because it’s coming out in March…that’s the only reason it’s not on here…

5Please remove “Pirates of the Caribbean” from the list. The 2nd one is a MAJOR disappointment, totally ruining the series for me. I will NOT WATCH the 3rd one ever.

7What about Aqua Teen?

8It’s “Phoenix.”

9ATHF…. must have… TMNT…. must have but take your ‘technically’ point, but in my opinion the best of the lot will be Transformers and the Simpsons…. Transformers may not follow the cartoon so closely but sounds and looks dark as hell and thats generally what makes for a good transition. Fantastic 4 will be terrible.. mark my words. Thanks.

11I didn’t even realize half of these movies were coming out already! I’m especially looking forward to Spidey 3, but will definitely see some of the others. What I’m really waiting for–and that they keep pushing–is the next Indiana Jones.

13The flash is apparently too large for my screen. Some items are cut off on the
bottom, and you can’t scroll to them without using multiple “focus on this
