If you’re a hardcore geek (and you probably are if you’re reading this) then chances are, there is a start-up swimming around in your brain somewhere. I know the feeling, I’ve got a few of them myself. If your start-up idea revolves around businesses and requires business information, you are probably aware that it’s going to cost you somewhere around 100,000 to 5 bajillion dollars to get that information….oh wait…that that’s not actually true anymore.
iBegin has gone open source, and in doing so, has significantly changed the way we’re going to do business marketing in the future. It uses Wiki technology to allow businesses to add and modify their own listings. It provides non-commercial access to its lists for free, and commercial access to geocoded lists for $1,000 per state, or $40,000 for the entire country.
What makes this important is not just the free non-commercial access (making it much easier to research your competition than ever before), or the inexpensive geocoded commercial version…it’s a wiki system allowing businesses to keep their information up to date. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that the folks behind iBegin are also behind the Bloggy Network, but even if they weren’t, this is an important change in business marketing, that any young geek entrepreneur should know about…
