In a recent Playstation 3 update, Sony installed a folding@home program which helps make complex calculations that will work towards the cure of various diseases, like cancer. Of course, this program is anything but new to PC or Mac owners, but what’s new and interesting is that a relatively small number of Playstation 3’s have outperformed a much larger number of personal computers. In better detail, the Playstation 3’s processing power was responsible for 72% of all the operations made, which is very impressive, considering there were over 160 thousand computers making the same calculations, and only 27 thousand Playstation 3s.

1Out of curiosity, is it possible to turn off the folding@home app on a PS3?

2Ahem… Nevermind my obviously stupid question. It occurred to me just now that the app wouldn’t be running in the background all the time like a desktop computer.

3Not only is this at least a week late, it’s already been debunked.
