Captain America #25 hits the stands today. Marvel has been promising something very BIG for this issue…and this morning the New York Daily News managed to spoil it before the comic can even hit the stands.

My opinion of it – without spoiling the plot – is that I don’t like this move. Captain America should have some kind of significant voice right now – especially in the heated political climate that divides America these days – and what they’ve done here, and where it looks like their going – makes that impossible.

If you’re like me…when you see a SPOILER WARNING message – it’s like a car wreck…you want to avert your eyes…but you just can’t.

Having said that…SPOILER WARNING…the shocking events of Cap #25 will be revealed after the jump

From the New York Daily News:

As Captain America emerges from a courthouse building, he is struck by a sniper’s bullet in the shoulder and then hit again in the stomach, blood seeping out of his star-spangled costume.

His death is sure to ignite controversy in the comic book world – still reeling from Superman’s death in 1993 and resurrection the following year – and even political pundits, who may see Captain America’s demise as an allegory for the United States.

“It’s a hell of a time for him to go. We really need him now,” said co-creator Joe Simon, 93, after being informed of his brainchild’s death.

I’m not a big fan of this move. First off, we know that Steve Rogers won’t stay dead…sniper bullets or not…this is all being written by the guy that brought Bucky back from the dead.

BUCKY!

The only standard in comics was that Dead doesn’t mean Dead…except for Bucky….but even that isn’t true anymore. Now, it looks like Bucky is going to end up being the new Captain America (at least until Steve magically returns from the dead).

The saddest part, is that this isn’t happening to tell a good story, or to make any kind of statement about America. The entire reason for this can be summed up with the last paragraph of the New York Post article:

“I was shocked. I was not expecting it,” said Gerry Gladston, co-owner of Midtown Comics in Manhattan. “I’d rather they didn’t kill him – but it’s going to mean great sales.”
