Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely continue to impress with this latest issue of the All-Star Man of Steel.
As befuddled and confusing as the current DC Comics continuity is, it’s refreshing to just pick up an issue of this title and run with it. If you have a basic knowledge of DC history, this title is easy to understand, although people completely unfamiliar with the concept of Bizarro may be confused.
This issue, like every issue in the All-Star run thus far, hearkens back to the Silver Age of Superman, while feeling completely modern at the same time. It’s a delicate balance that the creative team pulls off masterfully.
In this issue the Bizarro cubed Earth shows up near our Earth, and all Hell breaks loose as creepy Bizarro zombies begin a slow, backwards invasion of Earth on the night side of the planet.
Even though the story moves very quickly, and not a great deal happens in it, it still manages to feel epic, and has an ending that will definitely have me back for the next issue. Without spoiling anything, there is a new character introduced on the last page that I can’t wait to out more about…
If you’re a Superman fan at all…particularly of the epic nature of the character…then All-Star Superman is a title that you should seek out. Even if you’re not a huge comic book fan, or up on current continuity, this All-Star title is one of the best representations of the character ever, and well worth a read.
