Reconstruction: Chapter Two – Don’t Make Me Embarrass You In Front Of Your Friends
Well, thanks to Dwayne McDuffie and Paul Pelletier the “fantastic” if finally back in the Fantastic Four.
I have long been a fan of the FF, particularly of the classic Kirby/Lee (that’s right, I put Kirby FIRST) run on the title, and have often returned to the title over the years that I’ve been reading comics. Through most of the 90s the book was barely readable. Between Reed dying, and Franklin growing up, and Sue dressing like a whore it was not a good time to be a fan of the book. After the “Heroes Return” event, the book got back on track for a while, and while not a must have on my pull list, it was one that I picked up from time to time.
Then there was Waid and Ringo’s run on the book. The “Unthinkable” arc that lead up to issue #500 was one of the best FF stories I’ve ever read…and it proved to be very hard to follow. I left the book again shortly after the FF met God (who was Jack Kirby, BTW), and steered clear of the most recent, Civil War filled run (as I did ALL Civil War related stuff)…but two issues into this creative team’s run, and I am hooked.
It’s cosmic, it’s damatic, and it’s still FUN. Let me be clear on that… F-U-N – FUN! Comics used to be fun…seriously, I have some of them in boxes in my closet. They were fun. Too many comics these days aren’t. In this issue we continue to see the “new” (and temporary) FF of Johnny, Thing, Storm, and Black Panther, as they attempt to recover the dead body of fallen super hero Gravity from an alien planet that seems to have stolen it.
Oh, and Galactus is on the way too…
The Silver Surfer seems to be working for him again, and that ain’t good.
Meanwhile, Reed and Sue are trying to reconnect their marriage by taking a second honeymoon on Titan.
I don’t intend to spoil this issue for you, just to tell you to GO BUY IT. Get #544 while you’re there too so you can catch this story from the start.
It’s fun, it’s surprising, and it’s an easy pick up for a new reader that may have been out of the mix for a while.
Go buy it now.
I only have one thing negative to say about the book…I hate the cover. Marvel, please stop letting Michael Turner send you a pencil sketch, and you throw some color on it and call it a cover. These things look BAD. I know he’s capable of more, and I know that Paul Pelletier should be the guy doing the covers. Let’s give this Michael Turner stuff a rest, ok?
