Madman is a character that I’ve always wanted to check out, but have never really had the chance to. Mike Allred is a fantastic artist, and his work has always appealed to me, but when Madman was popular, I was a little too much of a 90s Image kid to get into him…well, lucky for me, now Madman is at Image, and his first issue does a great job getting new readers up to speed on what to expect from the series.

I don’t know why, but I was expecting something a little more slapstick with Madman than this moody, pulpish piece…and I have to say that is a welcome surprise.

The entire first issue sets up a new impending threat for Madman, while recapping his entire history for those of us that are just jumping on the bandwagon. I think it’s fantastically executed, but old readers may feel unsatisfied simply getting a rehash of what they already know.

Still, if you’re a fan of Allred at all, there is some beautiful artwork here, even for those of you that already know the story. I highly recommend picking Madman up. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
