Since the world of media gadgets obviously doesn’t have enough proprietary flash memory storage formats Sony and Sandisk put their hands together and decided to release yet another flash card format, as if the number of different cards we have wasn’t ridiculous enough already.

The selling point for these new cards seems to be the data-transfer speed, since it uses PCI Express as it’s interface, which has a maximum data transfer of 2.5 gigabits per second. However, the target speed of the SxS cards is much lower, at 800 megabits per second, which is still pretty impressive.

The first model will have 16GB of capacity, but you can expect that number to double over the next few months. I’m guessing a brand new Sony camera will be launched very soon to pair up with this new card.
